Bam Adebayo on DPOY voting: The goalposts move for me

?A point guard (Marcus Smart) got it over me, a center (Rudy Gobert) got it over me, a power forward (Jaren Jackson Jr.) has gotten it over me,? Adebayo told Yahoo Sports. ?The goalposts move for me, in certain degrees. It?s me and a lot of undrafted dudes, and we still have a top-five defense.? ?These other guys have All-NBA dudes (around them). Some of it is, they don?t really care about us and that?s fine. I think they should pay attention to consistency because being top five DPOY, I think I have the longest streak of All-Defensive teams, so the goalposts move for me.? ? via Yahoo! Sports

Interesting that Turner is threatening to match Amazon. Guess they just put all games on Max and call it a day.

No, those games are going on TNT, because sports is how they keep the carriage fees coming from cable providers, and they use TNT to leverage the fees for all their other channels.

They have to match. The reason they can't match NBC is they don't have broadcast. They can match Amazon which is streaming only.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

that was my understanding as well. TNT "couldn't" match because they didn't have the network of NBC and didn't have the streaming of Amazon. they can't do much about competing with NBC, but there is Max which theoretically solves the streaming piece. idk it will be interesting to see what happens.

They can match HBO and put the games on TNT, which they will do.  Maybe they?ll put them on Max too, but they?ll be on TNT.  The NBA isn?t going to say ?No, streaming only.?  It?s to the NBA?s benefit to get the most reach.

The issue with NBC is that NBC is putting some games over the air, which TNT can?t do because it doesn?t have any over the air stations, and certainly not a nationwide network.  So the NBC offer is inherently superior.  Discovery/Turner can put it on streaming, since they have Max, but they can also put it on TNT.  And they will until cable totally dies.

With the Heat seemingly stuck in NBA purgatory ? good enough to make the playoffs, not nearly good enough to win a title -- is management?s desire to bypass a soft rebuild short-sighted?

According to people familiar with the team?s thinking, the Heat still believes that this group ? spearheaded by Jimmy Butler - can be a contender if healthy. Management knows more help is needed to improve the chances of a fourth long playoff run in six years but does not believe that an overhaul is necessary.

Quote
Barring a change of heart, the Heat will enter training camp with Butler on its roster, even knowing that he intends to become a free agent next July. Miami also hopes that an appealing trade opportunity arises to help supplement Butler and Bam Adebayo.

But if the first three months of next season go poorly, there will be another decision to make ? trading Butler or risk losing him next summer.

Interesting. They could go all-in if the right trade materializes or they could blow it up if things go badly in the first half of next season.

Quote
If Butler has a poor season or misses significant time with injury, he could exercise his player option for $52.4 million in 2025-26. But that?s not his intention going into the season, according to The Athletic.

Quote
Let?s face facts:

The Celtics are significantly better than Miami, while the Knicks and 76ers are clearly better after adding Mikal Bridges and Paul George.

Indiana, Cleveland, Orlando and Milwaukee all finished ahead of the Heat last season and can all make the case they?re better than Miami, as well. That?s seven teams arguably ahead of the Heat.

Well, the writer seems to understand the situation if not Pat Riley.

Quote
Here?s another way to frame it: With Butler on the team, Miami looks like a seventh or eighth seed. Without him, they look like a ninth or 10th seed, because Detroit, Washington, Chicago, Charlotte, Brooklyn and to an extent, Toronto, are rebuilding.

https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/barry-jackson/article289711764.html

The article talks a fair bit about trading or not trading Jimmy Butler. It doesn't offer much of value there. It does state that no contender will have $50mil in cap space next summer needed to sign Jimmy which may reduce his interest in leaving Miami as a FA next summer.

Kings draft pick Devin Carter (#13 pick) is out for at least 6 months with a left shoulder injury.

However, trades haven't been found for Zach LaVine or Nikola Vucevic to really push the rebuilding efforts forward. In fact, there seems to be no market available for either player.

Trade talks for LaVine haven't gone anywhere, and cap space to absorb LaVine's contract has mostly dried up. The market for Vucevic never really developed in the first place, with teams wary of taking on the veteran center's contract.

LaVine is owed $137.9 million over the next three seasons. Vucevic is on the books for $41.5 million over the next two seasons.

It is surprising they cannot find a market for Vucevic. $20mil a year isn't bad for a starting caliber player. You'd think some team in need of a center would make a move for him.

Memphis. Phoenix. LA Clippers. Golden State.

I agree, but look how soft the market was for Jonas V.  I don't quite understand it.

Lateral quickness. It?s too easy to pick on poor defenders in 2024. It?s why I love that the Celtics won?t compromise on defense.

Miami can't and won't contend with a healthy Butler. 2023 playoffs they lucked out going into the finals playing against banged up teams each round (and yes Tatum was banged up in Game 7).

2022 playoffs they couldn't beat Boston. But times have changed between 2022 and 2024. They couldn't even beat the C's in the regular season. They are done for.

Shortly after the Cleveland Cavaliers season ended in the second round against the Boston Celtics, reports came out about dysfunction within the team. One of the central issues was that star guards Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland hadn't found their footing as a backcourt pairing. It was going so badly that reports said Garland would ask for a trade if Mitchell extended in Cleveland.

However, that's not the truth, according to Garland.

"I don?t want to be traded," Garland said. "Those are just rumors."

Those rumours always did feel off-base. They look to have a great rapport on the court with one another. D Mitchell the older stateman showing Garland the way and often encouraging him to be more aggressive and shoot more often. To take a bigger offensive role. Rather than being a roadblock to Garland's success.

I think he?s about to fall off the cliff soon. He?s not much of a winning player anymore.
