KP is going to have surgery on his torn medial retinaculum in the offseason and will have an expected recovery time of a few months.

Quote
BOSTON -- Boston Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis returned to the court for Game 5 of the NBA Finals, playing through a rare left leg injury that he told ESPN will require surgery and will have a recovery process of a "few months."

Porzingis suffered a torn medial retinaculum allowing dislocation of the posterior tibialis tendon in Game 2 -- an injury the team actually described as "rare" in its news release.

"Of course," Porzingis told ESPN, when asked if he was concerned about making his injury worse by playing on it. "I think something could have happened, for sure, especially compensating now on the other leg now, which I just came back from.

"There was definitely some added risk, but I didn't care. I was like, 'I want to give everything I can and then fix it after if I need to.'"

Kudos to him for gutting it out the way he did.

Shades of Willis Reed really.

Awesome effort.  Now enjoy that duckboat parade and get your surgery.

Love the guts, but seeing his comments and knowing he needs surgery, he should not have played. Glad he made it through, but too much risk in hindsight.

Not all injuries that require surgery to fix are created equal.

I totally get it. He has been apart of losing at almost every stop. He has given his heart and soul to this team this season. I feel like he would try to move Heaven and Earth to try and contribute in this game.

KP has the heart of a warrior. Get well and come back stronger next year big fella!

I think it was always known he would get surgery. Although the doctors online kind of make it seem like it?s routine and probably 8 week rehab if I recall.

I think the fear was since what he tore is the seatbelt there?s a risk he could damage other tendons.

During an appearance on Barstool Sports' Pardon My Take podcast Wednesday, Mazzulla revealed that Porzingis overruled the Celtics' medical staff to make himself available for Monday's Game 5 at TD Garden, which ended in the C's celebrating Banner 18 after a 106-88 win over the Dallas Mavericks.

"Yeah, that's kind of how it was," Mazzulla said. "But it was like, 'We don't know how long this series is going to go on for -- let's try to save him from himself.' Because he was trying to play, so let's see if we can get through a game or two (without him).

"And then when it was Game 5 at home, he was like, 'Hey, this might be it. I've got to be out there.' So he was like, 'I'm playing,' and he overrode the medical team there was just like, 'I'm playing.' Credit to him."

The good news is that he will spend the off season rehabbing and strengthening his legs rather than playing for the Latvian national team.

I'm just glad he managed to get on the floor. First half he was killing us on defense, but he settled in better in the 2nd half. Regardless, I wouldn't have had it any other way.

I was thinking have the surgery and come back around December.  No Olympics or anything else.  Save every inch of health that he has for the Celtic's season.

Not to say Porzingis isn't "needed", of course he is, but I sort of view him as a luxury. Lets be real, we pretty much won the Finals with him only playing 6 games out of the 19 total in the playoffs, and 3 of them were him as a role player.

I'd be fine letting him just not play the first month or two of the season to let him heal, and bring him back from the 2nd half of the season and beyond. We can survive with Horford and 2 of Queta/Tillman/Kornet in the meantime. In a way, it could also give the latter group a bit of experience which they'll gain from more minutes and opportunities which bodes well for the postseason.

I don't think anyone is that worried about the regular season.  Even if Porzingis misses the first say 30 games, so what.  We probably still win 20 or more of those games. Playoff seeding is nice (to be top seed) but not as important as playoff health.  I do think Porzingis is important to the playoffs though.  We got through this season largely without him but it is also true that we had a easier path than we may have next playoffs.

Embiid could be healthy, Giannis full strength, NYK will have Randle and Anunoby probably.  The east could be a lot tougher.  And then if Jamal Murray stays healthy, we could end up with DEN in the finals.  Or maybe OKC finds a key player and they end up a top team again.  I know that Porzingis isn't going to like sitting, but that is probably how we need to handle things.  It is clear that the chances of him getting through a whole season and long playoff run are slim.  The odds of him getting through 2/3 of a season and a long playoff run are at least a little better.  He is "only" making $29M next season.  That is probably fair for say 55 games and the playoffs for a play of his value.

Oh we definitely would have needed him against Denver and Minnesota as they have talented bigs. It's all about matchups and we were fortunate enough to draw the Mavs in the Finals.

Get his surgery and rehab done. Put him on minute restrictions for next season and maybe have him start playing in December or January.

So has there been any reporting on whether KP will be ready to start next season? Is he expected to miss time at the start?
