Did you watch JJ last year? He was a systems qb on a stacked team. Drake had to create their offense, while Michigan's running game carried the day.

JJ McCarthy might end up being better than Drake Maye, but I think it's hard to say that right now.

I watched every snap of JJ McCarthy?s career.  He has IT.  It is not about the physical stuff, although he holds his own there just fine.  He has a special mentality and will be great sooner than later.  (Also, a system QB is a weird insult considering he is the first QB drafted from that coaching system in nearly a decade).

If we had like an Adrian Peterson and needed an elite hand off QB, I would want JJ. He could be great, but I think (along with most of the draft pundits) he needs a year of development. He could be serviceable this year, but the Vikings offense is stacked. It is a great situation to develop in.

JJ over Drake is a hot take in July of 2024. I wonder how that will change after a year of JJ throwing to Jefferson while Maye rides the pine. Jordan Love?s stock was low until he finally played well last year and now he?s one of the richest players in the game.
The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.

It's July 31st.   A preseason game hasn't been even played yet.  It's ridiculous to take anything the sports talking heads are saying at face value right now.

For the record, Bedard is a notorious liar & snake so no one should be taking anything he says seriously.

Twas my take all last year.  The Vikings planned to sit McCarthy on draft night, but he might not need it.  He?s already splitting reps for the #1 role in camp after entering as the #3.  A bit different than Maye.

What's so "hot-take-y" about it?  They were both top 10 picks.  It's a legit conversation.  C21 is one of the most level headed posters on this blog and has been speaking the praises of McCarthy for quite some time now.

JJ rose rapidly up the boards, while Maye was considered to be a top 5 pick since he got to UNC. Penix rose rapidly up the boards as well. I'd be surprised if Penix was better than Maye too, though he also has better weapons than Maye too.

Here's a PFF mock draft from September: https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2024-nfl-mock-draft-four-qbs-top-10-usc-caleb-williams

JJ isn't picked as a first rounder. He went on to have a very good year, surrounded by a ton of talent. It's hard to determine how much of that success came from JJ, the offensive line, RB's, etc. Mac Jones was super successful in his year at Bama, then struggled when they took the talent away in NE.

It is early, but Michael Holly had similar thoughts yesterday.

I watched Drake Maye in college. I loved him in college. He was a tremendous college player. At times they compared him to Justin Herbert. I could see that. People compared him to Josh Allen. I could see that.

"Today, you know who I saw I saw the ghost of Mac Jones. Not just Mac Jones facing off against Tom Brady as a rookie. We?re talking about Mac Jones in Dallas in that awful beatdown they took at Dallas last year. He was terrible in every sense of the word. He couldn?t get anything right.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Again, it's July 31st.  Training camp started a week ago.  Zero games have been played and the first padded practice was Monday.  There really is nothing to take away at this point.  Good or bad.  Guys like Holly get paid to be talking heads and provide content.  He's also years removed from beat writing.   I just think its ridiculous to have any hand wringing or putting guys in the HOF at this point.

Totally agree. If it's not camp, people will overreact about preseason games. Or regular season games. Drake or JJ could start off cold and develop into good QBs. Or the opposite. There's too much uncertainty to give anything but an opinion on their future. I do think that Maye has the hardest path forward of all of the rookie QBs (including Bo Nix), so sitting him for a full year is the way to go. No reason to kill his confidence when the rest of the team isn't prepared to win.
The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.

How are the other rookie QBs faring?  Heard mostly good about McCarthy, but some bad.  Caleb Williams supposedly having early struggles.  Haven't heard anything about Daniels. Ditto Nix and Penix. I'd be curious to see how local media are analysizing these guys right now.

There?s reports coming out of the Broncos camp saying Bo Nix is looking like a starter and that the only reason he?s not is because they want him to ease into it. He?s looked better than Wilson so far.

For Penix, Atlanta is obviously giving Cousins all the 1st team reps, but Penix has been looking good throughout, throwing tight spirals on deep passes and to the sidelines.

A college buddy does sports radio in Chicago and he says the Bears camp is the most fun he?s had in a really long time.  Very high on Caleb.

He has three very good receivers to start with. Couldn't have had a better landing pad from USC. Unlike Drake, who should be spending all of his time with Polk and Baker over the next year.

Sounds like Milton is doing OK at least.

According to Boston Globe's Ben Volin, Maye's first few days at training camp have been nothing short of a disaster. "Drake Maye continues to underwhelm," Volin wrote on Tuesday evening. "[He's] running second on the depth chart and getting a ton of work, but he hasn?t made many noteworthy throws."

Volin mentions how Maye failed to meet expectations during a series of red-zone drills. He threw terrible passes to JuJu Smith-Schuster, Javon Baker, and Mitchell Wilcox, resulting in the offense being forced to do pushups. His teammates likely weren't thrilled by that.

What's even worse for Maye's outlook is that he's been outplayed by Milton throughout the first six practices. Volin notes that the ex-Volunteer appears to have the best combination of size, strength, and athleticism among the Patriots' QBs and that casual observers would have difficulty figuring out which rookie gunslinger was the third overall pick three months ago.
