Never lost a minute of sleep with Grant gone. Didn't like him. He was situationally helpfull, but not enough to pay him. With the current team he'd be behind Brissett in the rotation if it were up to me. Cuban has left Doncic with a very poor supporting cast. How long will Doncic comply to this? He's a champion who wants to win.

His role on the Celtics would be as a bench guy getting 15-20 min/gm (when everyone is healthy), like Pritchard or Hauser.  He would be useful in that role, but you can't pay $52M for that.  He got a chance at a big contract and a starting role.  Good for him.
Grant is making 12.4 million this year.  That would be 6th on the C's.  That seems about right to me.  The C's financial issues in the future stem from 4 guys making over 30 million with Brown at right around 50 million next year and Tatum the year after (and while Jrue drops off, presumably he and White will both be re-signed at essentially swapped value).  Grant's contract would be fine on the C's, it is the 4 or 5 really high priced players ahead of him, that makes his contract difficult.

I don't understand this.  Those 5 players that would make more than Grant are all considerably better, all star level or better.  Grant isn't as good as Horford and Horford makes $10M.  Grant may not even be as good (or would play as much) as Pritchard who is set to make $6.7M starting next season, Grant will make about twice that.

Grant is not a horrible contract but he is bad contract, and it doesn't matter that DAL has only 2 contracts >$30M and the Celtics have 4.  They were able to spend for Grant but I am sure are now starting to regret it.  To trade him, they would need to attach picks or take back some other bad contract.
Grant doesn't have a bad contract. He makes the MLE. That is what players of his ilk make. And yes all those guys ate better than Grant, I wasn't saying they weren't, but those 5 guys are why Boston has to really stretch the bench with vet minimums and 2nd round rookies.  Those 5 are HUGE numbers on salary, which will only compound next year.

I don't think Grant is overpaid, but he's definitely got different expectations in Dallas than he would have had in Boston. In Dallas he was expected to be a starter, while in Boston he was never going to be more than a backup. It turns out that he's not good enough to be a starter over there either. It doesn't help that their fans have increased expectations now due to their hot start, instead of just being happy with a modest improvement over last year.

He's overpaid.  His salary is in the top 30% of players, whereas his production is well below that.

He's basically a poor man's Hauser:

Roy: "I think Grant is a good guy who is in the NBA in large part because of his self-confidence"

Grant was drafted and got his chance based on being the SEC Player of the Year two seasons in a row.
Kinda reminds me of Ernie Grunfeld (though different positions) in that Ernie was a great college player whose power and scoring style did not translate to the pros because of his lack of height and athleticism. Like Grant, he just overpowered guys in college, but ran into players just as strong with more size and athleticism in the NBA. Still was a solid backup role player for several seasons in the pros.

Not sure about Grant and his efforts to be this tough guy enforcer and instigator. He was very aggressive in college, but not with his mouth or by instigating confrontations. Maybe he thinks that will provide him a long-term role in the NBA, but I wish he would have just focused on his strengths and been a solid rotation guy for us. He is a valuable player at that 7th or 8th rotation spot who asked for and received more money than he is worth. Imagine Grant playing to his strengths, keeping his mouth shut and making around $8+ million per season with a coach who knew how to better use him. He would be an important player for this year's Celtics achieving their goal of winning a title.  I wish him the best and hate to see him going through problems in Dallas. I met Grant at a youth event here in Knoxville a few years back and he was polite and unpretentious - a good guy.

What you're suggesting is a 40% pay reduction, in terms of yearly salary. Would you do your current job for 60% of your current wage?

I don't have any problem with Grant the person.  He is 25 years old (as of Nov 30), that is still really young.  He is a public figure with a lot of money being thrown at him.  I predict he will figure this all out and accept that he isn't going to be a star and just play within himself.  Over time, the contract won't seem so bad and he will settle in to being a highly productive bench player and/or fringe starter in the league for several years.

And yes, if the Celtics had matched, he would have a role similar to Pritchard or Hauser, just getting a lot more money than either of them.

A lot of these issues are what I saw with the C's.  The C's team defense hid some of his warts that Dallas can't.  Grant was worse then Tatum complaining to the refs.  I was glad the C's didn't resign him and I'm not surprised he struggling in a larger role.  A lot of people questioned why Joe benched him.  Looks like Joe knew what he was doing.  I don't wish ill upon Grant I just don't think he's worth the contract he wanted.

I'm probably as guilty as anyone here of over-hyping Grant. When he's on his game, I still like him. However I was right about one thing - someone would overpay for him. Which Dallas has done. But I didn't expect that would be due to under performing (at least to date) on pretty much a market rate deal.

It wasn't a serious suggestion - it was more a "what if" Grant's situation had gone a slightly different way, how well it could have worked out.

He had me fooled a bit as to his worth.  Now that I see him though clear lens , he strikes me  as bit less important .

Yeah fair enough - I wasn't a huge Grant fan but he would be an upgrade behind AL in the depth chart, for sure.

Another addition by subtraction for the Celtics. First issue is he never should be starting for the Mavs. He is a bench guy.

and MLE is fair value. I never understood all the chatter about him getting upwards of 15 million, but MLE should have always been the expected value and that is what he got
