Bill Chisholm on whether there was any sort of financial mandate from ownership:

I thought that only politicians could lie like that.

I believe him.

I believe this was a Brad Stevens trade. Not an ownership trade. I also believe it was a cap management trade rather than a basketball trade. But it was Stevens who decided this was the best route long term to put out strong basketball teams.

That Stevens did not want to pay Jaylen. That he did not want the 2 supermaxes on the books. That he did not think he could put enough quality talent around JB / JT to win another title with both on supermaxes.

And to say again, Wyc has said the exact same thing would have happened if he had of remained owner as has happened with this new owner. The 2nd apron would have forced the tear down of the title winning team. The departures of Jrue & Porzingis.

This Jaylen trade = I think this is purely the basketball front office that is driving this.

He also said that the Jrue and KP deals weren't financially motivated.

I know you say you're willing to spend to win, but what do you say to fans who say that since your group has taken over, numerous quality players have gone out the door for mostly salary/tax relief?

A: I mean I I just would well I just don't necessarily agree with the premise there that this they were salary based. This was every decision that was made you know the prior decisions I should say that was those were basketball related decisions.

The Celtics very clearly want to lean into Tatum being the unquestioned number one guy, and they didn?t think Jaylen was going to accept that. Feeling that it would create more unnecessary problems for the team was a non-starter that obviously contributed to the decision to shop Brown around the league.

The other notable excerpt from The Athletic article indicated that the Celtics weren?t happy with how Brown hijacked some of the playoff games, straying from the system and leading to poor results. Despite scoring 33 points in the Game 7 loss, he shot just 12-27 from the field, and the team was outscored by 16 during his 40 minutes.

Contributing to concerns about the situation, the Celtics believed that Brown went off script too often during playoff games as Boston blew a 3-1 first-round lead to Philadelphia, according to a league source.

2. Joe didn't do a great job controlling the team. Why did he let that happen. He should get axed too.

Noa from CelticsBlog has an article about Tatum addressing the trade of his fellow Jay when he was at the Newton Community Stage being interviewed by Howard Bryant at the launch of his new baby book ?Baby Dunks-a-Lot: The Day the Basketballs Stopped Bouncing.?

Some excerpts:

?The NBA is an incredible business; it?s an incredible job, but there are some downsides to the business and moments like this, where you just kind of feel like you?re going to be on the team with somebody, because that?s all you know,? he said. ?And then it?s just like, one day you find out that they?re no longer on your team anymore. And, we?re all humans. We feel all those emotions. Going into the facility, and knowing that you have different teammates, and somebody that you?ve been to war with, essentially, is on a different team??

Together, Tatum and Brown made five Eastern Conference Finals and two NBA Finals.

In 2024, they won their first title as a duo.

?It?s tough. But it just makes you appreciate the moments and time that we had,? Tatum said. ?Obviously, it came to an abrupt ending, but it doesn?t mean that it wasn?t super successful. Great years, obviously, that he gave to the city and to the organization.?

Brad Stevens, who addressed reporters in a press conference on Monday, said that Tatum did not have any input in the decision to trade Brown.

?I have a real hard-and-fast rule,? Stevens said. ?I don?t ask guys about other guys.?

In lieu of Jaylen Brown (and Nikola Vucevic, who departed in free agency), Tatum now welcomes a slew of new teammates like Paul George, Mike Conley, and Mitchell Robinson, among others.

All three players were at the Auerbach Center this week and took photos with their brand-new Celtics jerseys.

?The tough part is you miss teammates, but then you have new teammates, and you want to welcome those guys and accept them and move forward with them,? Tatum said. ?So there is a balance there.?
