Signs are pointing to 3/6 for a Tatum return:

I think it makes sense. Friday night. Come back to play against the team you won Banner 18 on.  ;D

How is our cap situation affected by Tatum's injury?

I'm assuming we got some kind of accommodation seeing that we basically have an "extra" player on our payroll who isn't on the roster?

Just wondering how that affects all of the machinations in trying to get under the apron.

Thx!

Our situation is unaffected by Tatum?s injury.  We did not apply for an injury exemption for him.  If we did, we would have had a $14.1 million exception that could be used for a free agent on a 1-year deal or to trade for a player on an expiring contract.  But again we did not apply for one, and in any case the exception is only against the cap not the tax, so it would not have been used even if we had.

If you have enough injured players you can sign a 16th player, but as we have had no more than 14 players all season, currently have 12, and have been relatively healthy aside from Tatum, that also has not been a consideration.

Ah, thanks for the explainer.

  • On To Banner 19!
Do you guys think Tatum or the Celtics are doing too much with his Achilles recovery documentary?  :-X

I get that they have to be a bit dramatic for a documentary, but I will admit some of the comments he made and also the background music that was playing during it made me laugh. "I felt my soul left my body", "I couldn't even lift my head up to view the X-Ray". Also basically the doctor just casually being like "oh btw, I'm free at 3 PM today, want to just do the surgery now?"

Yes I'm sure he had a ton of emotions and thoughts during the days after the injury, and some aspects of it are cool. But yeah some of it is overdramatic lol.

Those early Lay?s ads were merely the formation of his dramatic genious.

I'm not great at comparing rosters mostly because with teams other than the C's once you get past the top 3-4 I really don't know the players.  But the Cs to me are such a solid group of NBA contributors.  Didn't seem likely in October as we didn't know what was going to happen with Queta, Scheierman, Walsh, Garza and Hugo.  We also didn't know that JB was going to step up or that Sam would continue to grow as a defender.  And throw in 6MOY Pritchard, DPOM White, and the newly acquired Vuc - and this team is solid. Maybe they don't compare to OKC, Denver, SA, Detroit (IDK), but they are looking pretty good - and that's before adding Tatum to the mix.

The ball movement and defense we've seen over the last month or so is testament to the fact that this is not just a 3-point gunning team.  Energy has been great sparked by the the youth and though there have been  clunkers, they are winning 2 out of every 3 games, and doing so impressively.  Can't wait to see what JT adds to the mix.

One guy who has really stepoed up is Scheierman.  His defense was questioned widely as a rookie, but this year it's become a real strength.  I read that since he was inserted into the starting lineup, we've had the #1 defense in the NBA.

I can not recall a team being this deep.  One thru eleven is a pretty solid regular season lineup.  Then there is Amari Williams and slots 13 and 14.

85/86 Celtics were pretty deep...
6-Walton
7-Wedman
8-Sichting
9-Carlisle
10-Kite
11-Vincent

I'd slightly reword it to "I cannot recall a Celtics team with this much effective and team-oriented depth.

The 2019 team had bigger names and arguably more talent:

Horford / Baynes / Timelord
Morris / Theis / Ojeleye / Yabu
Tatum / Hayward
Smart / Brown
Kyrie / Rozier / Wannamaker

Too many egos and agendas.

stick with the top 8 on that squad.  Carlisle never got off the bench, Kite didn't get much time that season with a healthy big 3 and Walton.  Vincent didn't get much run either that year.

Agreed, you could see it in the Sixers game how Scheierman moved his feet laterally really well and kept their guards (for the most part) out of the lane.

He's also adept at going straight up with his hands and not being called for reaching in or a blocking foul with his body.

I remember seeing him in the Summer League when they were basically throwing him the ball while he was 30 feet from the basket and expecting him to create his own offense.  He looked like a disaster.

But that's not his game.  And I'm glad he's been able to just fit in, and do the little things that a 3-and-D guy needs to do (including being pretty adept at rebounding).
