Dave Cowens is the last player-coach in the league. He coached the Celtics in the 1978?79 season before relinquishing his coaching duty to focus on his playing career.   After the salary cap was instituted in 1984?85 season, the NBA has prohibited teams from employing a player-coach.[The ruling was established to avoid the possibility that a team would circumvent the cap by signing a player as a player-coach, as coaches' salaries are not counted under the cap.

A potential reunion between Marcus Smart and the Celtics would not be off the table.

The Wizards, who now carry 17 players on the active roster, are expected to offload key veterans to make room for younger assets and would reportedly prefer to send Smart to a desired location.

Hope not!

The only trade that would make sense is Marcus plus assets for Simons, and we then re-trade or waive Marcus.  I don't think that's in the cards.

It is a bit deceiving to say that WAS has 17 players on their roster.  It is true but Holms is only guaranteed for $250K and Champagnie is $0 guaranteed.  They could easily waive both and get to 15.

A trade of Simons for Smart would save BOS $6M.  That would be some potentially useful second apron head room.  If WAS was willing to give up a draft pick too, that would be a trade you would want to consider (not sure WAS would throw in a pick).  It comes down to what is better for 2026-27 and beyond.  Would either Smart of Simons be in the plan?  What gives BOS the most flexibility for future trades to get players that may help in 2026-27?

From WAS perspective, Simons would seem to be far more attractive than Smart and more likely to be a future piece for them.

I love Marcus and he will always be a true Celtic in my heart, but I'm not sure playing for us again would be great for his 'legacy'. People already call him a chucker and think the only reason we won last year was because we finally got rid of him. Imo, the teams he was a part of always overachieved and he was a big reason why, but it's hard to change a narrative, especially after a championship.

If he returns this season and we are mediocre, it will just validate the Smart hatred, even though there  many other reason we will be mediocre.

If we are involved in a Marcus trade, then I hope it's a 3-teamer where he goes somewhere else. Maybe once the team is fortified again, he can come back and be a bench piece and help contribute to winning again.

On a related note, I saw a number of WAS fans on Reddit say they want no part in a Simons for Smart trade. They want their younger guys to develop and much prefer Smart's veteran leadership to what Simons would bring. So, even if there is a trade, I don't think we'd be getting picks.

I still have fond memories of Marcus but in terms of trade value, I think Simons has more value.  only reason for C's to make that deal is if Wash sends a pick with Smart and if they're willing to deepen the tank (less offense) for next year.  The extra buffer to get under the second apron would have to be appealing as well.

NBA announced the Celtics NBA Cup group for the upcoming season.  Not an easy group here.

(I also still give zero [dang]s about the stupid Cup)

Celts will probably win it this year since there are no expectations
Yup

Hate the cup. Someone must like it since they are continuing it.

I really enjoyed it the first year.  Last year I did not pay much attention, mid-November to mid-December is always a busy time, so that might have gotten in the way.

If Smart makes his way back to Boston, it will probably be because Washington couldn't find anyone who wants to take him on in a trade (a lot of injuries the last few years) and he gets bought out.

Love hearing this from Jordan. I hope he makes it on this team.

Jordan Walsh told the Globe on Saturday that coach Joe Mazzulla, after the season, told him his role is uncertain because of the uncertainty of the roster. Now that the Celtics have lost Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, and Luke Kornet, and with Torrey Craig a free agent, there are available minutes for several positions, including the 3-and-D role Walsh is vying to fill. Now that we?re closer to the season and we know what the roster will look like, I gotta revisit that conversation to see what I can do, Walsh told the Globe. If there?s something open for me, how do I maximize my opportunity, get to it, and take advantage.via Boston Globe

i am rooting for him as well. but he needs to change from being just a great athlete into a better rounded basketball player, one who makes his team mates better.

Not sure if this was in the game thread, but Brad mentioned during an interview during the game that it?s hard to see Jrue, KP, Luke and Al go. I know he mentioned that it was likely that Horford was gone, but didn?t realize it was definitive.

Just like Brad said, looks like Al is moving on from Boston. He has taken out the Celtics in his X bio. All reports have him going to the Warriors. I was hoping he?d retire a Celtic. He truly embodied what being a Celtic is, but leaving the team twice just leaves some bitterness in my mouth. I know he wants a shot at another ring, and that he?d probably stay if JT didn?t get injured, but still. It just doesn?t seem right that he?s not retiring as a Celtic.
