Dang. RIP  :(

For some who were maybe out of the loop, it was revealed (rather insensitively) just days ago that he had brain cancer.

Our hearts are broken with the loss of Tim Wakefield.

Wake embodied true goodness; a devoted husband, father, and teammate, beloved broadcaster, and the ultimate community leader. He gave so much to the game and all of Red Sox Nation.

Our deepest love and thoughts are with Stacy, Trevor, Brianna, and the Wakefield family.

Oh my goodness. I'm shocked. I knew he was fighting some illness, but I never suspected he was close to death. That's very sad.

Edit: Just saw phantom's note about the brain cancer. Wow. Didn't know that.

Yeah, and it sounds like he and his family were trying to keep it private, but Curt Schilling in a recent podcast he did revealed it and even admitted he didn't know if Wakefield wanted it out there.

Too young. If it was glioblastoma that’s just a terrible diagnosis and a rough end to life. I’ve lost 2 friends to it. I hope his wife’s cancer is treatable.

Just terrible, gut-wrenching news.  One of the most likable Red Sox of all time.

If you were a kid in New England playing baseball in the summer of '95, you were sanding down your fingernails and trying to throw a knuckleball because of Wakefield.  He was a phenomenon.

There is no '04 ALCS comeback if Wake doesn't give up his Game 4 start to pitch relief in a Game 3 blowout to help preserve the bullpen.  Selfless act.

Cancer sucks.

He was a selfless player, for sure. Hey, Wake, you wanna start? Sure. Mind if we move you to the pen? No problem.

Not only was Tim Wakefield a great competitor and elite knuckleball pitcher, but he also seemed like he was genuinely one of the nicest guys to ever put on a Red Sox uniform and a true gentleman. RIP. My heart goes out to his family, and I wish nothing but the best to his wife, especially towards her fight.

What Schilling did wasn't right. I heard what he said on the Sports Hub, and it sounded like he brought it up with good intentions. As a Christian, he thought the power of prayer would help. As far as him letting everyone know, does anyone think his podcast reaches that many people? The reason why everyone knew about the cancer diagnosis was because news outlets caught wind from the podcast and decided to cash in on the news. For me, they are the real scumbags here.

Wow it wasn't that long ago he was on NESN. RIP for someone taken too young.

RIP, and prayers for his wife, who has pancreatic cancer.

Wakefield seemed like a genuinely decent human being.
