I wonder if ownership demanded Bill to sit Mac, based on how badly the team was performing and not wanting to further ruin Jones. Have him sit and observe from the sidelines and not take the additional punishment. For what its worth, Mac was at Mayo's press conference yesterday and not Zappe.

Having said that, the team could still draft a QB at 3. Best case scenario would be to sit the possible rookie QB, and let Mac start for the year. Jones would be highly motivated to prove he belongs in the league (and go into free agency)  and then the rookie QB can take over in year two.

The other option would be to sign a free agent QB (Mayfield) or maybe trade for one. What about Trey Lance? He simply hasn't played because of freak injuries. He's been learning from the sidelines and hasn't taken the physical and mental abuse most young QB's take. I see him as a QB the Packers would have drafted and waited until he was ready. Well, maybe he's ready next season, but we just have to make the trade with Dallas.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Mike Onwenu isn’t likely to return. Onwenu just wrapped up the final season of his four-year rookie deal.

“Many teams view Onwenu as the top offensive lineman in free agency because of his physicality, quickness, and ability to play guard or tackle,” Fowler wrote. “The Patriots essentially know Onwenu isn’t coming back, and he will have high bidders.

Great. So the O-line will actually get worse.

Don't worry I'm sure they'll pay the reliable Trent Brown! And bring back Anderson + Reiff!

Honestly, if Caleb Williams and Drake Maye are guaranteed to go 1-2 and neither the Bears or Commanders trade out of it, I probably would give up a 2nd or 3rd round pick for Fields and use the #3 pick on MHJ.

I like Jayden Daniels but it's risky. And this way, you still get a mobile QB and add a legit WR1 in MHJ. Tackle is still a need but it's a very deep draft for it, you can even get one in the 3rd round potentially. Keep Bourne, Henry and Elliot to go along with Douglas, Stevenson, etc. and I think you're a solid team that can grow with Mayo as HC and Fields the QB. Or even if Fields doesn't pan out, you can still build up the team and then either sign or draft one later on. The QB is important but you also need a stout O-Line + a few good weapons to help them (look at Houston, Green Bay, etc.)

I know people will mention Baker Mayfield, Kirk Cousins, etc. but Baker is probably staying in Tampa, Kirk Cousins + Kyler Murray make a ton (or will make a ton elsewhere) and outside of that it's the bridge QBs anyways like Jimmy G, Brissett, etc. No thanks. Fields is still young and intriguing. He definitely seemed to improve in the 2nd half of the previous season as well.

The thing about guys like Mayfield and Cousins is that teams with those guys as QB will likely not win a SB. And history bears that out—most teams that win SBs have really good quarterbacks, not tier-2 guys. I'd rather go with a rookie who shows great promise.

Sure, Fields (or Caleb, Drake, Jayden, etc) could work in NE, but they need protection.

Mac never had a chance in NE. I'd argue that the offensive line is worse than the one that Mac had his rookie year.

Asking one of these "can't miss" prospects to run for their lives on the majority of pass plays is a mistake.
The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.

The other approach might be to trade #3 for #9 plus Fields, 2024 2nd, 2025 2nd (or something like that). Pats pick a top OT at 8, pick a WR and another lineman with their 2 picks their two 2nd rounders.

Bears have a huge draft day with Williams and MHJ.

I don’t think anyone can argue against it. They went 10-7 that season and made the playoffs.

Also, I really don’t get the interest in Fields. He has had zero success in the NFL. If he can’t have a good year with DJ Moore, what do folks expect him to do with Juju as a #1?

But if the Pats get Josh McDaniels...goodbye 2024 Patriots szn

I don't want McD back. He seemed to have trouble with redzone offense.

I would view Onwenu as one of the must keeps on this team. Resigning him, and extending Barmore should be goals 1a and 1b. It is interesting that this comes out now, because a few weeks ago he made it known he wanted to come back.

What is the point of hitting big on 6th round linemen if you just let them walk when they hit their prime? I understand not overpaying players that become average, but Onwenu is a very good player entering his peak years.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Mayo and the Patriots are set to interview Carolina Panthers’ outside linebackers coach Tem Lukabu for the defensive coordinator job.
