It would be the largest contract in NBA history. Potentially 304 million, with 70 million in the final year of the deal. In that sense, I think both sides taking their time with the details all things considered is normal.
Think about that. A guy who isn't even one of the 20 best players in the sport is going to get paid more money than anyone in history. That is a bad contract.
It is just unreal that he is going to get that contract. He is a good player. But $304 mill? Yeesh...
I am afraid it is going to just saddled the Celtics financially for a long time unless they can move him.
The only thing I can say is it looks bad because he's the first one to get it.
But it's not inconceivable that it won't be top 10 in salaries at some point as other guys become eligible for supermax deals.
Although, I do wonder if there is a point it will stop? I mean will we hit a time where players are making $100million a year? Or will salaries keep rising?
The cost is just going to be passed onto all the NBA fans in the form of Cable and ticket prices. Which already is high.
Next year these players will be eligible for huge contracts (bolded are the people I could reasonably see signing for these massive 5 year contracts)
5 years, ~$385 million: Lebron James,
Anthony Davis (this would require them making an all-NBA team, otherwise they drop to the next level)
5 years, ~$330 million:
Paul George,
Kawhi Leonard (making All-NBA could push them up to the level above), Jaylen Brown,
Domantas Sabonis (this would require them making all NBA again, if not then they drops down to the next level), Brandon Ingram, Jamal Murray (eligible for this extension next summer if them make an all-NBA team)
5 years, ~$275 million:
Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby
5 years, ~$220 million:
Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball (would jump up a level if they make All-NBA)
Brown could drop down the #5 just from next summer, people need to start getting used to the higher contract amounts.
And to put it into perspective: people are hand wringing a lot about the extra ~$25 million he can get on this extension vs. what he could have gotten from us next summer if he never made All-NBA
(This is all assuming a 10% jump in the salary cap, and basing things off of a 5/$300 million deal for Brown so the numbers are all a bit lower than the real ones)
