According to a league source, Jaylen Brown is headed overseas for an NBPA event and contract negotiations with the Celtics are expected to pause while he’s gone. Both sides remain confident that a deal will be struck, but there will be a delay.

Is JB somebody who feels like he has to be intimately involved in negotiations, rather than allowing his reps to take care of it?  Is he at the literal negotiating table?

Otherwise, I'm not sure why overseas travel necessarily has to delay this.  I think I'd prefer to have the contract guaranteed ASAP, but to each their own.  People say he's got until October, but not if he gets hit by a bus awhile abroad.

yeah this is odd to me. Also what could they be negotiating honestly? Especially if word is celtics are offering the full max.

I'd imagine when he is negotiating what might be the largest contract in NBA history that Jaylen would want to be there himself, especially as a leader in the NBPA. At the very least I don't think you'd want the extension to leak while you are overseas. So "pausing" doesn't really surprise me, more surprised its not done yet.

Do people think he is making the fan base sweat as he feels under appreciated?

thats what I mean. so word is celtics are offering him the full supermax. so theres no issue with what percentage he is getting.

so what is it? is Jaylen want everything? supermax, trade kicker, player option?

That would be incredibly foolish

Any delays seems to me to favor the Celtics.  Until the extension is signed, the Celtics have the option to trade him.  Not expecting that or thinking it is likely, but if Brown is traded, it is him that looses the opportunity to sign such a big contact now.  He would probably sign for similar money as a UFA next off season but that is a whole season and a likely long playoff run to risk a serious injury.

Is there a deadline after which an extension is not allowed?  For example, can the season start and have the extension settled during the season?

Deadline is start of regular seaosn, so no he can't sign the super max once the season starts.

Do you know if that changes from year to year? I had been reading an article from when the Bucks were offering Giannis the supermax and it mentioned the deadline was December of that calendar year. Although I believe that was in 2020 so it may have been COVID related. I am just curious.

For the true supermax that allows a player to reach the 35% max prior to year 10, it’s always at the beginning of the season, so that indeed would have been December in 2020.  Players also are able to  sign extensions for up to a 140% raise from the last season of their deal (it used to be 120%), up to the 35% max if they’ve had enough service time.  Sometimes these extensions have also been called “supermax”, but they are not the same thing that Jaylen is eligible for. There is a later deadline for that extension — I believe January 15th, but I might be mistaken.

Jaylen just seems like a guy who likes the experience of going through the whole process personally.  He's a very intelligent guy and probably thinks he can take his experience to help future players going through this same process.  I would be utterly shocked if he didn't resign with the C's.  Players know they can demand a trade if they are unhappy.

Of course he (and all players) are entitled to explore their options. For me, I'd prefer to trade him as his role is redundant to Tatum (and he left a somewhat bad taste with his Game 7 dud performance, bffs with Kyrie etc but that's my view). Of course, the trade has to be a good return, win-now type contributors, and not just second round picks.

At this point I don't really care. It'll get done, or it won't and he gets traded. Whatever.

I absolutely want to keep Jaylen, but if he truly doesn't want to stay here or he feels "frustrated" then what can you really do or say. I still think it gets done, but if not then I guess we'll just trade him.

I'd like to think they are negotiating where they make another trade, and then work it out with Jaylen for something slightly less than the supermax, but he still gets paid handsomely and it works for the C's cap.

But I'm no longer losing sleep on it regardless what happens

If he doesn’t sign by October he’s going to be traded. No way Brad allows him to walk for free.

I mean brown not signing the super max would be really dumb on his part.

Given some of the people he associates with, this would not shock me at all
