It's interesting to see how the staff is built.  With Ime, it was mostly guys he had worked with or who he knew through the Portland basketball scene.

With the current stay it's two former Celtics players and a really respected assistant coach.  As far as I know, none has a prior connection to Joe.

You bring up an interesting point. It's my impression that head coaches usually pick their assistants. The new assistants may be good, but if Joe had no or little say in their selection, will he tune them out?

I’m sure Mazzulla met with and approved every hiring.  Stevens might have used his own connections to reach out, and maybe some of their agents reached out to the Celtics, because it was no secret they were in the assistant coach market. But there’s zero chance any of them would accept the job without having met with and connected with their future boss, nor that Stevens would have hired someone Joe did not like.

I agree.

Sometimes, though, you can't really know someone until you've worked with them for a while. You might like someone at first, then come to not like them. Hopefully that's not what happens here, but I think it's well within the realm of possibility.

Maybe Joe Maz isn't around at the beginning of the year.  I'd have to think, he's high on the candidate list for WVA since Huggins just resigned.

He was a coach for a school in WV, right? It’s not coming out of nowhere, but I would be very surprised if he left before this season started.

I don't think Smart is enough to net Wendell Carter by his lonesome never mind a late lottery pick on top of him.

Your source acknowledges Mazzula would never leave the Celtics for WVU and posits him as an option if WVU went with an interim coach and then Mazzula got fired next year.

For my sanity I need to be reassured that you don’t really think Mazzula would walk away from the Celtics to coach WVU.

Agree. WCJ has more value than Smart, we would have to send a future pick I imagine.

Would be pretty thrilled if Orlando lost their mind and did that deal though.

“I am a player, not the coach" and "Coaches job is to draw up the plays, my job is to execute" sounds like shots at Joe, sorta implying that he wasn't doing his job as a head coach last season.

SHOCKED!!!

yeah because JOE SUCKS
LET'S GO CELTICS!

You forgot the last line of that quote, though:  “They did a fantastic job last year of putting us in the right place to succeed. I’m sure it was an unintentional oversight.

WCJ is there starting center. Doubt they want to trade him. Jonathan Isaac could be available although the injury concerns are an issue.

Well Smart, this did not age well.

But, hope you are excited in Memphis. Rooting for you to help take down the powerhouses in the West.
