I wouldn't go after VanVleet for a young team like the Rockets. He wants to be a star himself. He wants 15-20 FGs a night. He doesn't want to be a veteran guide. He wants to be The Man. He is not the right guide for young players.
This reminds me of those early Raptors team with Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady. They had great veterans who were happy to take a secondary role in the team. They had big guys who did the dirty work in Antonio Davis, Charles Oakley, Kevin Willis. They had lower usage perimeter vets like Muggsy Bogues, Dee Brown, Dell Curry. All guys who knew they were there to support the younger guys and were in a stage in their careers where they were happy to do that.
That is not Fred VanVleet. That is not Dillon Brooks. They are in the prime and think of themselves highly.
Lot of rumblins in Toronto about VanVleet having problems with other players in the squad. Tension with Trent Jr. Tension with Scottie Barnes. Tension with Siakam. Tensions over how many shots VanVleet was taking. Tensions over S Barnes not getting the ball enough. Tensions over VanVleet's defensive effort dropping off. Memphis got rid of Dillon Brooks in large part because they thought he was a bad example for Ja Morant (which I am not sold on but it is a regular talking point).
