With all the contract shedding by teams across the board due to the CBA, I'm starting to think Celtics may not in fact offer JB a super max deal; it will be very hard to trade other than to a team with the cap space to absorb it. By the time his new contract kicks in, I doubt that any teams will have that much cap space. Until now, I figured the only negotiation would be over the 5th year option. Now not so sure.
If Brad can't negotiate something more reasonable, we could be looking to trade him this off-season. Not sure if one year of JB for 4 years of Garland works without adding some picks, honestly. The combined Garland, JT and KP contracts make a lot more sense than those of JB, JT and KP. Just saying.
Yeah, with the official CBA now released, it is as bad as we all thought it would be. Draft picks locked 7 years out, moved to the end of the 1st round, etc. I think we should all assume that Grant is a no-go no matter what at this point. There's just no way we are going to go over the 2nd apron just to keep him.
But, yeah, I am starting to come around on trading Jaylen. It is worth discussing numbers with him and seeing if they can come to an agreement, but $60M/yr over 5 years is going to be crippling for a non-superstar. And Tatum will command slightly more next season. I really like Jaylen and want to keep him, but with KP's arrival and pending extension, it seems pretty unreasonable.
It's really too bad they didn't make it so that teams who draft well don't get screwed. Like, a team's cap would only get 'charged' the max amount another team could pay their player in FA. That way, Jaylen gets his money, but the franchise isn't screwed.
