The remaining FA options are pretty slim at this point.  If we don't sign Grant, we probably have to trade Brogdon if we want to bring in a "legit NBA player" to fill the back up PF slot.

As to Banton, if I understand correctly, he is signed to a guaranteed 2-year contract for a regular roster position.  Whether he is sent to G-League or not, he is taking up a roster spot, like Nesmith was when we played in the G-League.  At least that is what Spotrac is reporting for his contract.

So then we become really weak at guard.

Brad has mismanaged this off-season.  KP is nice, but is he so nice that he's worth Smart, Brogdon, Grant, Gallo and Muscula?

And, are we really one of the least desirable free agent destinations in the league now, to the point where we can't sign anybody other than dumpster dives?

I missed the part where we lost Grant and Brogdon; and why are you bringing up Gallo and Muscala and not mentioning draft picks received?

Seems premature to conclude a mismanaged off-season. I love the Smart-KP trade and Grant and Brogdon aren’t gone yet. And… if they are gone, we don’t know for what.

Pat Beverly said on a podcast that the Celtics were interested in signing him and offered him more money than Philly (he signed for 1 yr, $3,196,448), but they asked him to wait a few days so they could clear other business. He didn't want to.

It's not like Boston isn't being active, but free agency is about choices. These guys aren't obligated to come here.

Changing subjects, the Celtics extended a QO to JD Davison, correct ($1.8M)?  Why wouldn't he have accepted this already?  The Celtics can rescind the offer at any point, right?  If they do that and fill his roster slot with some vet min signing, he would likely be stuck with a 2-way contract unless some other teams signs him to a regular roster contract.  But he is not likely to get any more than the QO from another team so why not jump on the QO and accept it?

And if he does accept this QO, is there any possibility that he could still end up as a 2-way player again?  There must be something here I don't understand.

His QO is for a 2-way contract, which is why he hasn't accepted it at this point I imagine.

OK, that would explain it but the report was that it was a QO for $1.8M, could that really be for a 2-way?  I think another year on a 2-way is the right thing for Davison, I don't see him as quite ready to be a regular roster guy.  But I like him as a prospect.

The Celtics also extended a $1.8 million qualifying offer to JD Davison. Last year's second-round pick spent his rookie campaign on a two-way deal.

Yeah, I think that report was lacking some details.  All 2-ways can be converted to an NBA contract, and his NBA salary will be $1.8 million if he's converted.

Does he still get the $1.8mil if it isn't converted?

Or does he get a lesser salary in the G-League?

Sorry, the answer was in the next post. It is a $560k two way contract that becomes a $1.8mil if converted. Okay.

Jeez. That is quite a lot to lose to make way for Porzingis. That added loss of G-Will (if it were to happen) would put a dampner on things. That was quite a lot of depth that we had that we would no longer have.

The Brogdon mention above was in response to the idea of having to trade Brogdon for a backup PF to replace G Will if G Will were to leave in FA.

The question of mismanagement for me (the question rather than the answer) comes down to betting on an injury prone big man and then giving him a medium term extension (3yr contract) and pinning the hopes of winning a title on him being healthy.

Was it necessary to take such a large risk? Could it derail the Jays ability to win a title until he leaves?

This is separate to the discussion above but it is a question in the back of my mind since the Porzingis rumours started. It is sensible to take such a large risk on such an injury-prone player. What happens if he falls apart physically again? Where does that leave the team?

I was wondering if something like that was holding them back with the TMLE. That they were reluctant to use it until they knew what would happen with G Will.

The luxury tax payments are large. Sounds like it is one or the other and they are holding off on non-minimum contracts until G Will's situation is resolved.

I feel like we were having discussions about whether Grant would be retained well before Porzingis came here. Obviously there are more financial concerns now, but Grant getting a silly contract offer has been a possibility for a while.

Clearly, the whole Grant situation is really what has everything in a holding pattern. It doesn't seem like we have decided whether we will let Grant go or not. If you know Grant is leaving and are not intent on keeping him, then you use the MLE and let your intentions be known. but if you keep Grant then you can't use the MLE. So i'm not convinced they even know what they want to do here.

I think after Grant signs an offer sheet from someone we will get clarity on what the celtics plan to do next. My guess is the celtics move quickly after that.

I do think Brad could've made some better vet min signings than the scrubs we got. Milwaukee is an example of a team I thought made some good signings to round out their bench. and we only got some guy who will end up in Maine and another guy who knows if he will ever see the court.

But i'm a little confused here. After the Miami loss, the idea of running it back was considered a horrible idea on this board and that this team proved they cannot win... now Brad retooling the roster instead or running it back for KP is botching the offseason?

we havent lost Grant or Brogdon yet...and still may not lose either...
