When asked why he made the adjustment of starting Rob with Al, his curt reply was “because we were down 3-2”. What does that even mean?

It means he identified that the Celtics were in danger of elimination?

I took Smart's comments along the line of "we all deserved to be criticized after that" "we all deserve to be criticized when lose that badly" even the head coach / including the head coach. We stunk and we deserved criticism.

I didn't think Smart was having a go at him.

When he said “we all need to be held accountable…even coaches” I took thst to mean there’s been some brutal honesty directed joes way for some of his decisions, like the Timelord one. Thst one seems to have been very popular with the team. And Joe 100% needs to hear it, certainly privately if not publicly. It’s the no way he will learn.

the timelord thing baffled me. clearly it was the lineup that vaulted us last year to this great defense. yet this playoffs hes playing 18 minutes off the bench.

then we go back to the 2 big lineup. and what do you know? the defense gets better and the sixers dont have an easy pass to the lane. you are making PJ tucker beat you instead of embiid/harden

Team won more regular season games this season than they did last Not going with the 2 big starting rotation. Rob’s body also held up for the most part once he made his season debut. For this series, an adjustment was needed due to matchups and the coach made it.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

I think this is right.  One of the most challenging aspects of being a coach has to be weighing costs and benefits of a decision — knowing that either way you go there’s a good chance you’ll get criticized (good chance you’ll be wrong). Obviously I don’t know what’s in Joe’s head but I’m pretty sure he didn’t suddenly awaken Thursday morning and think “I got it!!  Start Rob AND Al”.  You have an impactful player who also happens to be made of glass and didn’t play more than 5 games in a row all season.

As someone who has regularly criticized Joe this season, I will be at the front to commend him on a job well done.  I love the defensive adjustments, even if it hurt us early in the game.  Our pick and roll defense on Harden/Embiid was absolutely incredible today.  The scheme was to have Al cheat a bit towards Embiid to help prevent Harden from passing off to Embiid for either the roll or pop, while Timelord cheated off the corner to prevent Harden from getting an easy look at the basket.

If we can sustain our defense like that we'll be the frontrunners to win it all.

I'd like to thank Joe for having Harden forearm JB in the face.  That refocused the team and the momentum built from there.

Haha. Whatever Joe did to galvanise Al helped too

Make no mistake.  I'm still concerned about the Joe vs Spolestra matchup.

Yep, good job by Joe today on multiple fronts.

One thing in particular that I noticed is more attacking of Joel in the PnR iso. Felt like we saw more of that today than the rest of the series, particularly with them leaving Tatum on an island with him. Really liked that adjustment.

Still concerned about the Spo/Joe matchup. Luckily, without Herro Miami is just not nearly as talented as Philly or Boston and will take a monumental effort to overcome that.
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

The thing is, it doesn't really matter the talent level on the other team.  All that seems to matter is how the Celtics respond, and how they decide that they are going to play.  These last two games have been a great turnaround.  But the Heat are no cupcakes, and we just somehow need to play to our ceiling, not our opponents.

Oh absolutely. But then again, how many coaches out there can you say are definitively better than Spo? Not many. Even with Ime I don't think it's an advantage for us. Still a disadvantage

As I've been saying for years, I think that is less about Rob and more about Tatum at SF with Brown at SG.  The team is quite simply better when Tatum is at SF because he is just so much better there than anywhere else and he doesn't get as worn out with guarding bigger bodies in defense.  Couple that with Brown having a big size advantage at SG and that is how Boston should play.
