Another interesting MEM question I have been pondering is between Ja Morant and Desmond Bane. I rate Bane as a top 10 SG in the league. The question I am wondering about is how much difference is there between the two of these players.
Ja Morant is more dynamic but he is also a high error player which subtracts from his positive contributions. So his lousy defense, poor outside shooting and questionable shot selection leading to mediocre scoring efficiency subtracts from his more positive contributions of ball-handling, driving, playmaking, scoring at the basket.
Desmond Bane on the other hand is a low mistake player. He doesn't make as many positive plays but he makes hardly any negative plays so his net (positive plays minus negative plays) is pretty strong. He scores 21.5ppg on 48% FG% 41% 3PT% on 7 threes attempted per night 88% FT% for a TS% of 60.6%. He is probably a top 5 shooter in the league. Unlimited range. Scares the living hell out of opponent teams and is tracked over every inch of the court because he will pull up 5-8 feet behind the three point line and hit them. Bane is also a positive defensive player who helps you on that end of the floor. He also gives you solid secondary ball-handling and playmaking from the SG position. So a guy who adds to your team in several ways along with being one of the best shooters in league and is a low error player.
When I think about how much each player adds defensively, it is clearly advanage Bane.
When I think of how much each player adds offensively, I am not sure the gap is that big. Morant adds a lot with his quickness, handles, driving, playmaking and finishing going to the basket. Bane with his elite shooting, efficiency, secondary handles & passing, productive scoring (21ppg).
Now if Morant improves any of his limitations in outside shooting, scoring efficiency or defense ... he will clearly topple Bane. Morant has more talent / more room for improvement.
But in the here and now, is Morant really better than Bane? If so, is the gap that large?
