Celtics Sign Justin Champagnie to 15th Roster Spot

Champagnie, 21, played at Pittsburgh for two seasons before he went undrafted in 2021. To start off his professional career, he signed a two-way contract with the Raptors ahead of last season. Champagnie suited up for 36 games for Toronto last year, averaging 2.3 points per game. Toronto signed him to a deal last offseason, playing in three games this season, though he was waived by the team in December.

He's 6'6". His twin brother, Julian, just had a huge game for the Spurs against the Kings.

This is a surprise. Given our style of play and reliance on the three, this guy isn’t particularly an excellent shooter. Brad probably sees something in him that the Celtics could develop. I guess the 15th roster spot is more for player development than bench depth. It’s interesting to note as well that he’s not from our GLeague team. I still wish we gave Luka Samanic a shot if the 15th spot was gonna be for a developmental player after all. But hey, Brad watches these G Leaguers on a regular basis and for him to pluck someone from outside the Maine Celtics says a lot. He must really like this guy.

I have never heard of this guy.  I am sure they are hoping he turns out to be another Sam Hauser.  People are saying that he is not a good shooter but the quote in the article is as follows:

Champagnie isn’t a particularly good shooter as he shot 30.6% on 3-pointers on 4.8 attempts per game this season. He did shoot 40.9% from 3 in 14 G-League games last season, though.

41% last season (from 3) in the G-League and only 31% this season.  So which is he?  Good shooters can have a bad stretch but bad shooters usually don't shoot well for 14 games in a row.  I am sure the Celtics believe that he can shoot.  He was not a particularly good 3pt shooter in college.

I was not expecting the so called "15th man" to move the needle and it sure hasn't.  But that is OK.

I agree, just going by the numbers, definitely "meh" 3-point shooter based college and G-League.  But also appears to have some ability to score otherwise.  Brad has been doing well finding players (White, Hauser).  Some others not so much (Vonleh). 

We don't have very many slots for next season, 12 under contract (if you assume Gallinari picks up his player option).  Grant and Griffin are both FAs and Champagnie is not likely to be guaranteed for next season.  Assuming we sign Grant and use the MLE on someone, that would only leave one spot.  Not sure if Griffin comes back.  Davison may make the team next season.  We have a second round pick that will have to go somewhere.  Things are pretty crowded.  Champagnie is likely only here for a cup of coffee and maybe he gets a ring out of it.  Maybe he blossoms and ends up on the team next season, but seems unlikely at best.

Champagnie is mostly getting an audition for a 2-way deal next year, since we now have three instead of 2.  Also, Pritchard is almost certainly getting traded this summer, and Davison will take his roster spot.
