https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/36025332/nba-nbpa-agree-new-7-year-collective-bargaining-agreement

Early known major details:

- implements mid-season tournament

- 65 (!) game requirement for major season awards (I like it)

- second salary cap apron with loss of taxpayer’s mid-level exception to curb the big spenders like GS and Boston (used Galinari as an example of a deal that couldn’t happen under new rules - bad news for us with pending new contracts for the Jays)

- increase in vet extension raises from 120% to 140% (could affect a JB extension, though ultimately supermax eligibility is first show to drop)

Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

Also of note - teams will have three two way slots, up from 2.

But this puzzles me, from the ESPN article:

Quote
Each in-season tournament game would count toward regular-season standings; the two finalists would ultimately play 83 regular-season games. Winning players and coaches will earn additional prize money.

Anyone else find this really off-kilter?

This appears to be a leaf out of soccer's book where they have those mid season cups like the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Coppa Italia, Copa del Rey, etc. I know those tournaments don't count towards overall wins in the premiership. I guess they want to tie it to the overall season goal which is to win a championship. Because here in the US if you don't do that then everyone will consider these mid season tournaments/cups to be Mickey Mouse tournaments and would probably play all reserves just to get it out of the way or would think they were a waste of time and a distraction. We don't have the culture you have in the UK and Europe of valuing these mid season tournaments in and of themselves. Like even if a team missed out on the Premiership but they won the FA Cup it's still silverware they value. Here that mid season tournament has no intrinsic value, it would be valued as an All Star game.

Think of how long it took fans and players to value actually playing for their country in the Olympics and the FIBA championships - in fact many fans still don't value those and think the players playing in them is a waste of time and a risk to winning the Big Kahuna which is the NBA Championship. So I see why they tied it to the regular season standings.
Any odd typos are because I suck at typing on an iPhone :D

Yeah that's why it feels a bit weird to me - and not that it makes a huge difference overall, but let's say the race for scoring leader is really tight one year, and the winner pushes themselves in front because of that 83rd game? I guess it's a great storyline (and the goal is to keep people interested in the alleged doldrums of the season), but it still seems like a peculiar wrinkle to count 'a season' differently for some players than others. On the other hand I do like the 65 game floor for major awards.

Well I’m so glad the players will get to earn additional prize money for the tournament.

I can’t see getting wrapped up in caring about the tournament.  I don’t deny there will be some interest, but how disappointing to win the tournament and lose the championship?

If this replaced the whole all-star game waste of time that at least would be good - but that’s not happening.  I do like the idea of neutral site.  An injury in that 83rd game is going make people crazy.

The extension news is big for Jaylen.  It greatly increases the chance that he’ll resign with or without the supermax, and as it takes effect this summer, as opposed to 2024-2025 when the current CBA would have originally expired, it feels like it was made just for him.  Because the Celtics can offer him larger raises than other teams, an extension signed this summer under the new rules would likely be larger than a 4-year deal he could sign in free agency with another team in July 2024.

The other big news to me is that there is no mention of cap smoothing in advance of the new media deal.  Maybe they’ll save that one for when the new deals are signed, but get ready for a giant cap spike (upwards of $75 million from one season to the next) in a couple of years.

Looks like All-NBA will be positionless in new CBA, too. Another good change, I think.

Yeah, good change.

So far all of the ones I have seen look solid, other than the tournament.

Before these changes I imagine Celtics team owners/management hoped JB would make all NBA, so that they could sign him this off season with super max and take him off the market.  Now with this change (140% of previous deal), do they hope he doesn't?  Would help them salary management wise.

The new rules will make it more difficult for teams above the salary cap like the Celtics from signing free agents with the MLE exception if you go $17.5 mm above the tax line.  Given our lack of development in draft stock (traded away our last 3 first round picks), this could impair our ability to fill in roster spots, especially as Horford gets older.

Would a max deal vs a super max deal for JB be the difference between the Celtics going above or below the $17.5mm threshold? I have no idea.

If JB declined the offer, they would have to trade him this off season. Hard to imagine him declining.

Good Lord, more details coming out. Higher paying teams can’t sign players on buyout market either. Feels like they’re really hammering those teams in the new BA.

I wonder how they define “buyout market”.  If it’s just guys who are literally bought out (giving up money in the process) it shouldn’t have a huge impact.

Do you think teams will hang banners?  2023-24 Meaningless Regular Season Non-Playoff Champions.

Between this and the play-in, we’re getting close to participation trophy status.

hanging banners for a tournament?  that'd be pitiful.    The play-in is bad enough.  this tournament is just ridiculous
