Houston wins! If the Spurs lose we get 33, and if they win it will it be a coin flip?

I think that clinches 33 for us, per Keith Smith.

I don’t think so. Could go to coin flip. https://twitter.com/keithsmithnba/status/1645144449364762625?s=46

And the Spurs are already up 19. 🤦

Draft picks are resolved by coin flips / drawings, not traditional tiebreakers.

Keith Smith is somewhere between uninformed and dumb.  Either way, he’s extremely unreliable.

In Keith Smith’s defense, I don’t think he said it was wrapped up. Although he seemed to imply the Mavs would have no trouble with SAS. See tweet lines above.

Yeah. I read KS’ tweet and understood exactly what the possibilities were.

My impression is that he does understand the rules but he can be pretty far off in his estimates of what teams will be willing to pay for players.

He’s off on just about everything, from my experience.

His first tweet today about HOU was:

Quote
A win would likely send Houston's pick to Boston and the Portland pick Boston owns to OKC

That seems incomplete, at best.

Yes, that tweet through me off. Should have read the rules rather rely on KS tweet!

Spurs destroying Mavs so will come down to coin toss. It will either be 33 or 35, not bad. Just a few spots off of the pick  we gave I day for Brogdon (29).

Let’s find a gem!

What’s not clear to me is if we have to wait for just that coin flip, or also the lottery itself to determine whether or not the Rockets are picking before the Spurs in round 1.

Freaking Dallas.  What a blatant tank job.  In the end, whether we get pick #33 or #35, it probably will make no difference.  It is a good pick in any case.  Probably the same player available at #33 is available at #35, but Dallas really tanked at the end here.

I actually like this pick.  If you have a first rounder (we would have had pick #29), that is a guaranteed contract and you have less flexibility.  Now we can get maybe pick #33 and stash them, 2-way them, just not sign them, more options.  We are not going to have a whole lot of slots on the regular roster next season, especially if Davison moves up.  So I am pretty happy with this pick and I am fine that we only have the one pick.

Maybe they flip the pick for a one year player with new CBA hard to know what the plan for it is.

To be fair, the Portland and Houston picks are only so high because they were blatantly tanking for longer.  Portland in particular was a .500 team the first weekend in February heading into the trade deadline, and then finished out the season going 7-23.  They could have made the play-in if they went 12-18.

I agree, DAL is far from alone, and probably not even the most egregious.  It is really hard to punish teams for this.  For example, is HOU tanking or rebuilding?  Top teams rest their top stars to get ready for the playoffs.  Is that worse than "resting" you top players to improve or keep a draft pick or to develop a younger player as part of a rebuild?

I am just a little sour on DAL today as they were so pathetic against SAN yesterday.  You are right but at least HOU appeared to be trying to win games down the stretch (POR not so much).  DAL probably crossed the line.  There was no way they were going to win a game and lose that pick.  It wasn't just between the 10th pick or the 9th pick.  It was all or nothing for their situation.
