Stanley Johnson cleared waivers today at 5 PM ET (on 14 Feb 2023), league sources say, making him an unrestricted free agent.

So Stanley Johnson is reported to have cleared waivers and is a UFA.  The Lakers are out on him due to the CBA rule.  Not sure if the Celtics are interested or not.  It seems if Snell was their guy, they would have signed him already.  They may be waiting on Will Barton.  I have not seen anything on him finalizing a buy out.  All the reports seem to indicate he will be though.

I think the remaining potential options are:

Stanley Johnson
Tony Snell
Will Barton (likely bought out)

The bird in the hand philosophy could apply here.  If they wait for Barton, and he signs with LAL or MIA, Johnson may be already signed elsewhere.  I guess they figure they have Snell in any case but he could sign with a team if he gets an offer, right?  He has no obligation to the Celtics right now, is that correct?

I'd like Johnson as a disruptive defender off the bench. Snell was a good defender also. Any of those three would be fine with me.

I think I’d prefer Johnson over Barton, TBH. He’s a better defender, bigger player and would likely be more accepting of limited minutes. Barton is more of a SG and he’s pretty slight at 185lbs. We really need better SF depth.

On Johnson, it's my understanding that he's been primarily a power forward and small ball center over the last couple of seasons.  Does anybody have observations on his ability to defend smaller players?

In looking at the line up stats, it appears that LAL did deploy him as a big, PF and even a fair amount as a C.  With SAN, it looks like a mix of SF and PF.  It is a good question.  I have not seen him actually play in several seasons.  My impression is that he is kind of a Jae Crowder type, wing/swing, but curious like you as to what others have seen.

Stanley Johnson is a SF/PF like Crowder but LAL had to play him up a position because his jump-shot was so bad. They could not put lineups on the floor with S Johnson at SF with proper spacing when they had a non-shooter(s) at C (and PG with Westbrook) next to him.

Defensively, he is best at SF. Good at PF. Bad at C.
Offensively, he is very bad at SF, bad at PF and mediocre at C.

The Lakers used him effectively as a small 5 last year.  I don't know what he was doing in San Antonio. The small 5 was a viable role for him last year.  As prior to that he had bounced around so much after originally starting his career as a 3, my guess is he isn't the best at guarding wings, but is more viable there when he switches than a traditional big is.

Has Barton been bought out yet?  Is that who the Celtics are targeting?

No and maybe.  Since they've been so quiet, and since they're so good at keeping secrets, the answer could be yes.

The Los Angeles Clippers have begun conversations with Russell Westbrook, sources tell me and @Law Murray. Clippers received permission to speak to Westbrook and talks have started among franchise officials.

If they take Westbrook, do they still have room for Love?

I believe that they have 14 on the roster now but they could cut someone easily enough I would think.

I really hope he goes to the LAC. They face the Lakers in April and that would be entertaining to see.

Adrian Wojnarowski: Washington Wizards guard Will Barton has completed a contract buyout ahead of the March 1 deadline to become eligible to join a playoff roster on a new team, sources tell ESPN. Barton will become a free agent once he clears waivers. – via Twitter wojespn

This could be the final domino to fall.  Once he signs somewhere, I bet several other players will finally get picked up.
