Adrian Wojnarowski: ESPN Sources: The Wizards are working on a contract buyout for veteran G/F Will Barton, allowing him to become a free agent. Barton, 32, has had a limited role with Washington this season, but started 71 games and averaged 14.7 points for the Nuggets a season ago. – via Twitter wojespn

Get him, Brad! He’s realistically the best/most reliable wing that will be bought out. A tad small at 6’5”, but he could help with the scoring off the bench and provide some rest for the Jays.

EDIT: Forgot about Ross, too. He’d be nice, as well, though unclear if he’ll get bought out.
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

He'd be great for the remainder of the season to give the Jays a rest and in a pinch in the playoffs. And it's always nice to have some Vets in the locker-room.

I expect Danny Green to sign with Lakers after being bought out by Rockets.

I really want to get Ross. He’d be perfect for what we need

Do we need a generally inefficient shooter who doesn’t pass, rebound or defend?

I don't understand teams sudden interest in 2nd round picks. The only ones with any real value are early 2nds (30-40).

The rest are junk picks. The odds of getting anyone in the 40-60 range gotta be miniscule. Probably 5-10%.

2 Time MVP Jokic was taken 41, my friend.

That’s a needle in a haystack though

I think that is the new theory.  One second in of itself is not worth much but 5 gives you 5 shots at that needle, and with no financial commitment.  Things went overboard this trade season but I can see why teams would want to stockpile these picks.

Not really. There are many NBA rotation players who came from
round 2, including one of our most important players.

Yep.

If Barton wants to go somewhere he'll have a locked-in role he might not be interested in Boston but if he wants to play in consequential games deep into the playoffs, he'd be a perfect fit on the Boston bench. I hope they go after him.

I'd be happy with any of Barton, Danny Green and Ross. I think Danny Green is the guy I'd want. I didn't realize he would be a possibility but he got traded, and it's very likely he gets bought out and I think he does have that championship experience + ability to really help the bench.

We're not asking him to be 25-year old Danny Green in a starting unit, but even around 10-15 minutes a night would be useful. He is a good perimeter shooter which would only enhance us further there, and can play some solid defense

The problem with Danny Green is that he returned from his ACL just last week, and it’s questionable if we can allocate the minutes to him that he needs to get back in game shape.  Don’t get me wrong, he’d be an upgrade over Justin Jackson, but I don’t know that we could expect him to be a positive contributor if pressed into service, instead of a less negative one than Jackson.

He's a beloved teammate. If I had to, I would much rather play out-of-shape Danny green coming off a torn ACL than Justin Jackson.

Both players are break-glass-in-case-of-emergency anyway.

So it seems that the consensus buyout hopes are:

Will Barton
Terence Ross
Danny Green

My initial reaction would be Barton but I looked a little deeper.  He is small at 6'-5".  32 years old.  Listed as a SF but I think there are defensive issues.  His NetR this season is really bad and in particular his DefR is poor.  Both EFG% and TS% are pretty low this season (everything is down relative to career averages for Barton).  His DefR on Denver was not great, but not as bad as this season in WAS.

Danny Green is 6'-6" and 35 years old.  He has declined the last few seasons pretty dramatically (and that was before the latest injury).  Not sure what he has left and in particular, if he can still defend the SF position.

Terrence Ross is 6'-7", 32 years old, and actually has decent stats this season in ORL.  I admit that in the past, I have been unimpressed to put is mildly.  He has a decent NetR and DefR this season on ORL and his EFG% and TS% are both better than Barton (at least this season).

I am not sure if any of these options would beat out Hauser, maybe.  Certainly an improvement on Jackson.

Tony Snell (for reference) is 6'-6", 31, but it is not clear why he fell off the map this season.  His career stats are comparable to Terrence Ross.  Actually career 39% from 3 (Ross and Barton are 36.2% and 35.5% respectively).  I don't recall if there was an injury or something.

After all this, I come to the conclusion that we should not rule out Ross.  Barton appears really weak on defense and lacks size.  Ross is actually a slightly better career 3pt shooter, and both are at 38% this season.  As a complement to Hauser, Ross might be the better option.  And Snell might actually trump them all.

I’m hoping for Alec Burks. He’s 6’6”/214lbs, is averaging 13pts off the bench, while shooting 42% from 3pt. He’s 31 years old and  has a $10M team option for next year. Can’t see Detroit picking that up. Barton would be fine, would be less interested in Ross and not at all interested in Green due to his age and constantly being injured.
