The Blazers are trading Gary Payton II to the Warriors for five second round picks, sources tell ESPN.

This will quietly be one of the best moves of trade season. Now they have somebody off the bench they can actually trust again.

According to a league source, the Celtics are sending the Thunder their 2029 second-round pick and the worse of their two second-round picks this year in the Muscala deal.

Pretty solid.

So we don't have our own 2nd this year.

We DO have Houston's 2nd, which is protected 31-32. They are tanking efficiently enough that it's somewhat unlikely that pick conveys, though Charlotte, Detroit, and San Antonio are falling fast and are all 1.5 or fewer better. So if Houston finishes worst or second-worst they would send us the worst of Miami/Dallas' 2nd.

We also will receive Portland's 2nd. We also have an Orlando 2nd protected 31-55 which will not convey.

So ultimately we are sending out the WORST of Dallas/Miami/Portland and keeping the best of Houston/Dallas/Miami/Portland.

Pistons 14-42.  .5GB
Spurs 14-41.  1GB
Hornets 15-41.   1.5GB


Miami currently would land the 52nd pick in the draft. Portland currently would be tied for the 43rd pick.

So my thoughts on some of this:

Detroit getting Wiseman is a good deal for them.  I think there is still plenty of potential left there.  It is a salary dump by GSW.

Lakers take 3 steps forward (Russell, Beasley, Vanderbilt) then 2 steps back (Beverley, Bryant), but they did get out from under Westbrook.

The Clippers are grasping at straws, Hyland and Plumlee won't help them much.

Nuggets get Bryant, a nice pick up.  Lakers help a prime competitor, makes no sense.

As to our most direct competition, the Bucks get Crowder but give up Hill, Nwoba, Ibaka and 5 seconds.  Philly got Jalen McDaniels and 2 seconds for Thybulle.  I don't see either of those deals helping much.  We got Muscala who is not a big impact either but we are currently ahead and I don't think any team did enough to catch us.

And I do think there will be a vet wing available as a buyout for the final roster spot.

I am happy we still have Pritchard and Gallinari.  Looking at what other teams had to do for only modest improvement, I am fine with keeping both and see what happens in the off season.

Good! I'm glad we have the possibility of the Houston pick this year. Unfortunately the Rochets look like they get a double-bonus by tanking (keep their 2nd rounder and more ping-pong balls).  Is it still true that the worst record has the best chance of landing #1?
