I hate penalty kicks, particularly in a game like this.

It feels very cruel. I love the anxiety of it all, but it’s harsh. Prefer golden goal, but I do get that it can take too long

Using penalty kicks to decide the game is like defunding a basketball game with a free throw contest.  Boo

Such an anticlimactic ending to what was an epic game. So disappointing that the rules are this bad. Off to bed!

in the final does it really matter?

In terms of bench size & subs it could, but that could easily be managed I suppose

Yeah, I've seen games where play gets very sloppy and boring, because teams are so fatigued.  Not today, though.  Both teams were full of energy.

I feel for Mbappe. How can you score a hat trick and still lose? What a classic game.

So, recency bias and all, but where does this World Cup rank overall?  This final?

I still love the concept, and I think Roy shared it years ago on this board, that in OT you should remove one player from each side, every five minutes.

If no one scores, eventually you'll get down to 3-v-3, 2-v-2, 1-v-1.

Could you imagine the drama?  Once you get down to 4-v-4 or 3-v-3 the strategy of keeping a goal keeper in the net would probably change.
