I don't know why people are piling on Simmons.  He is a gifted athlete who has what may be a permanent case of the yips.  Before he acquired the yips, he was not a good shooter, but a good enough shooter that combined with his otherworldly athleticism and court vision, he could play at an all star level in the NBA, 3rd team all NBA in fact.

His physical condition is also a question.  Because he is such a head case, people understandably don't take his "sore back" or "sore knee" as seriously as you might with another player.  But I think he has some real health issues, combined with the yips.  And I think his yips are just a symptom of deeper mental health issues.  So between his mental health and his physical health, he has declined from 3rd team all NBA to barely a bench player.  I find it sad actually.

I am not sure what the debate is.

Ben Simmons just acts like a shallow person. If he was your nephew and still living with his parents, you wouldn't call this mental illness. It only seems that way because professional sports is usually very effective in selecting for a certain set of psychological characteristics that the average person would find extreme and obsessive.

It is rare, but certainly not unprecedented, for someone to be so immensely talented that they slip through the intense selection process, but it happens occasionally. There is no evidence that Simmons has mental illness, other than the fact that he cannot consistently summon the necessary will to compete at this level. He's just someone who slipped through the system without the intense work ethic and mental toughness most athletes need to get to the very top.

I guess that whether or not Ben Simmons has clinical or whatever mental illness could certainly be debated.  I certainly don't know.  But Ben Simmons had enough work ethic and mental toughness to achieve 3rd team all NBA.  Essentially one of the best 15 basketball players on the planet.  My opinion is that there is more to this than just being lazy or whatever.  He feeds into it with the sitting on the bench in the crazy outfits.  It makes it much harder to feel any sympathy for him.  Nonetheless, I have sympathy for him as I believe he is suffering from some form of mental illness that is beyond his control.  That he can't just pull up his boot straps and play.

It’s really difficult to say from the outside.  It may be that Simmons has always found basketball to be easy for him, and now that it isn’t, it has affected his desire to play.  I know lots of guys who don’t want to grind.

I mean, he’s made or has future guarantees for something like $210 million.  I’m surprised that more guys don’t pack it in under the circumstances.

Did you guys see the tweet I shared? A few weeks ago ben simmons told beal he would bet him 5k he would make both free throws. The shut up the rest of the game when he missed. Are we really supposed to feel bad for someone acting this way? It’s just obnoxious behavior.

This is 100% fact. Some people are just not grinders actually most people arent. I'm not hating on Ben but he's not putting in the work so I'm not feeling sorry for his millionaire arse either.
ok fine

I am not suggesting that you should or shouldn't feel bad.  I pointed out that I understand some of his actions make it hard to feel sorry for him.  I am just saying that I am sympathetic.  And not feeling sorry for him is different than piling on or calling him obnoxious.  Again, this is a fan forum, people call it like they see it.

As to the tweet you reference, Beal countered "make it $20k".  Did you find that obnoxious too?  Neither bothered me really.  Just a form of trash talk between multi-millionaires.  I can imagine it happening with Bird or Jordan or a lot of NBA players.

Who would be stupid enough to bet against Bird making any shot?

I don't think Simmons is a sympathetic figure.  Too much arrogance about him.  He got by on his talent and showed little drive to improve his game.

It’s way more obnoxious to bring up the bet out of the blue than to say double or triple it. Was that a serious question?

He’s still a decent shooter, rebounder, passer… But his defense is awful. It’s like playing 4 on 5.

Bucks are 6-5 when Giannis is out, but also Giannis left after the first quarter against CHI due to injury and the Bucks won that. Now same likely tonight, Giannis leaves after 6 mins but Bucks will likely win

Bucks are another loaded and deep team. But that to me also gives more credence as to why Jokic or Embiid should be MVP

Anyone remember when the Bucks used to lose? Guess the Heat only show up vs the C’s now.

To be honest it’s unclear he can even still shoot. That is why Cleveland cut him.

Nets trailing Bulls 63-29 at half.

They are awful.

Now 70-29. Yikes.

Simmons has only attempted 1 free throw in the entire month of February, in 96 minutes of play.  His level of passivity is embarrassing.  He won’t even take it the the rim any more for fear of getting fouled and going to the line.
