Fast forward to 7:45. So apparently Ben told the Nets that he doesn’t want to play basketball in the near future, until he sorts things out. Wow. So what happens if he skips another year? Do the Nets have to pay him? Will other teams take a chance if the Nets decide to trade him? This could end up being real messy.

Let’s rewind 5 days…. Does this sound like someone that needs to step away from basketball? Directly from the horses mouth:

Brooklyn Nets' Ben Simmons 'very hopeful' to play in Game 4 vs. the Boston Celtics on Monday night.

NEW YORK -- Brooklyn Nets swingman Ben Simmons continues to make progress from a back injury but likely won't play in Game 3 on Saturday against the Boston Celtics, though he said it was "reasonable" to think he would play in Game 4 on Monday if he comes through the next couple of days of workouts without any issue and he was "very hopeful" to play at some point in the series.

"It's literally day to day," Simmons said Friday after practice. "So I've had plenty of great days, which has been great for me in building up. So we're just trying to put those great days together and just keep building up to get back on the floor and play at that high level. ... If I could play right now, I'd be on the court. So it is what it is."

Simmons said he has gotten two or three scrimmage days under his belt and expects to get at least one more in on Saturday, but both he and Nets coach Steve Nash are unsure exactly what kind of impact he'll be able to have if he does play in this series.

"We'll find out," Simmons said. "It's a good challenge, but I'm looking forward to it. Especially playing with these guys. I think for me, my IQ's so high, to play with guys like Ky [Irving] and Seth [Curry] and Kev [Durant]. Just watching them, I know how they play, I know how they want to play. And for me to just get them in their spots and be a floor general, it's exciting. I'm looking forward to it."

Simmons demurred when asked if he would still try to come back if the Nets lose Game 3 and go down 0-3 to the Celtics, saying he didn't want to discuss "if's."

Simmons noted that while he is still building up strength in his back, he also has had to do so in his legs.

"When you have an injury like this, your whole leg is affected," Simmons said. "So it's going to take time to loosen these muscles and get back on the floor, but it's day to day. So it's treatment every day, pilates, workouts and just stay on top of it."

Simmons said it would be up to Nash and the rest of the coaching staff regarding how many minutes he might be able to play, but remained outwardly optimistic that he would be able to fit in well with a team with which he has yet to play a minute.

"I'll fit in," Simmons said. "I'm not worried about that."

It will be interesting to see what happens with rich Paul. He has embarrassed himself not knowing the cba on this and on the heels of not confirming basic job duties for noel. His client list is heavily tied to older stars (draymond, Bledsoe, wall) or players that have ties to Lebron (Lebron, waiters, Tristan Thompson, jr smith, kcp). He does have a few young stars like Anthony edwards, bridges, maxey and lonzo ball. I really do see his influence waning the next few years as he has more missteps abs Lebron retires
When Simmons fails to get his 20M from the Sixers, he'll probably fire Paul and sue him.

Will Lebron not become a partner in Klutch when he retires?

I don't see that as Lebron's path.  I see him much more in the Michael Jordan ownership path.  I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him take a piece of the Cavs (as an example) and with Gilbert's health issue he very well might welcome a minority owner like Lebron.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Not really to be quite honest.

I mean, I join in the fun because I too am a bit of a lousy human being, but let's be fair; we do NOT know his situation.

Fair to say he's not like other athletes though. And he at the very least lacks the mental toughness to communicate properly about his status.

Herniated discs can be incredibly hindering. He might just actually be in too much pain, and fairly not wanting to risk it for literally nothing.

Seems like an extreme way to get that money back from the 76ers.

I kid

No, the teams around him have done him no favors this year.

Yeah I was just about to say. So they either brutally misdiagnosed the injury the first time, or the whole, "he's coming back in Game 3, 4, etc" shtick was always false and just them trying to look good

Also just in basketball terms, does this mean Simmons might miss a decent amount of time next season too. I mean depending on the type of back injury I can't imagine it's some small thing either.

So, I dunno if we just learned nothing again, but the point we should've taken from this imo is that we really don't know what's going on.

For example, can you think of scenarios where nobody looks bad?

Like maybe Ben was largely pain free? And then he had a couple very physical practices and messed up his back again, waking up with pain when he wasn't expecting it?

I'm not saying that's the case, but as before, I'm arguing that none of this is an exact science. It really isn't.

It absolutely can be the case. But how many of these coincidences can we really believe? Remember, his antics started all the way back last year with the Sixers starting from the offseason, until the time of his trade to Brooklyn to now.

This to me is just like "the boy who cried wolf". At some point, people will stop believing you and your people (aka Rich Paul + Klutch Sports too).

They said a good 3-4 days in advance that he'd be back Game 4, and then conveniently after they fall behind 3-0 in the series he announces 24 hours ahead of Game 4, "oh nvm, can't play".

I'm not trying to argue with you or sound like I'm being harsh (apologies if it sounds that way). It's just I was also one of those people defending Ben earlier in the year, but at some point it's hard not to feel a little suspicious about everything involving him. It's not just here, even other NBA players like Reggie Miller and Shaq think Ben and his camp are spouting BS and I imagine they're a bit more connected too.

But whatever. Hoping Ben has a successful surgery and a speedy recovery, and we'll see where he's at next season.
