There has been a lot of complaints about the Celtics not signing a "real" NBA player off the buyout market.

Can someone please point me to the "real" NBA player that, and this is important, signed elsewhere and that would have realistically signed with the Celtics and, also important, that is having a positive effect on the team they signed with?

Thanks!

I'm not sure if you can say realistically would've signed can be proven one way or the other. There were a couple of players that might've helped but it was a pretty underwhelming buyout market this year.
Well, Tristan Thompson wasn't realistic. I don't think Dragic was either as he appears to be ring chasing in Brooklyn. Was Bembry realistic? He signed with the reigning champs who have an excellent shot to repeat and had a spot with more playing time available.

So this begs the question, what "real" NBA player would sign here if they know Udoka is most likely never going to use them?
As I said elsewhere, I'd sign Zeller.  He is still available though so he isn't lost yet.  I'd rather just get him in here earlier as opposed to later if you are going to sign him.  I think he could be an actual help in the playoffs.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Bigs - Shaquille O'Neal, Victor Wembanyama
Wings -  Lebron James
Guards - Luka Doncic

I’d prefer proven NBA players that have had some success in the NBA. How about Abdel Nadar or Brad Wanamaker. Both have played in Boston already they are established players. James Ennis wouldn’t be bad either. These are proven NBA players, no G-leaguers.

Nader has been hurt all year and is likely out for the season.  Wanamaker has been terrible.

That said, I very much except the C’s to get such a veteran the last days of the season for the playoffs.  In the meanwhile, they’ll get some look at some G-Leagues to see if there’s a diamond in the rough.  Remember, they’re signing these guys to 10-days; there’s no commitment if it doesn’t work out.

Proven NBA players that have proven they are not NBA players anymore. That's why no one is signing them.

And....they probably get as much playing time as the 10-day and 2-way guys the Celtics have signed. In other words, none or next to none.

I really can't believe people are complaining so vociferously over players that all really suck and would get no playing time or next to no playing time and make absolutely no difference on how far this team goes this year.

Celtics just signed Matt Ryan, a 6'7" shooter from the G-League.

Everything continues to indicate to me that Brad is looking to make a move this summer and isn't 100% focused on this season. I'm really curious what the plan is.

I'm not sure why signing guys to 10-day contracts makes you think he isn't focused on this season.  The trade deadline is passed and the buyout market has been really soft, but anyone who is bought out tonight won't be a free agent until Friday, which is coincidentally the same day we have two 10-day contracts that will expire.  That they haven't signed anyone to a rest of year deal means they're still keeping their options open to fill out the back of the roster this year.

Anyway, the highlights of Matt Ryan's shooting are nice.  His shot is definitely NBA quality, especially his ability to shoot on the move.  I'm guessing that's the only part of his game that's NBA-level, but he's got the size to defend wings at least, so maybe there's some potential to get his defense to playable in the future.
It's true, he could be treading water right now. It feels more to me like he's trying to get a closer look at some bench prospects that might develop in the future rather than prioritizing a vet that can help the team win now.

Good point. I guess there’s hope to add another rotation player/vet this season.

Keith Smith: On adding another player via buyout, Ime Udoka said “Unless something comes out of the woodwork that we weren’t expecting, we’ll probably stand pat.” Udoka said that Boston added Matt Ryan because they wanted another shooter with some size on a Two-Way after signing Sam Hauser.

This seems cheap?  At least add another body for practice / to look at for the future.

I think standing pat means that no one who might fit into the rotation will be added.  I expect they’ll cycle through some G-leaguers to get a look at them, and maybe find a vet free agent for the playoffs as a true “break glass if necessary” type player.

Love how the Cs sign a "shooter" from the Grand Rapid Gold, then another guy on the team goes for 57 on 11-15 3PFG....

Least Nik has played in the league, unlike our G-leaguers. Is he available? ESPN shows him on the Miami Heat. I’d love to take Stauskas, since they stole Max Strus from the C’s and he’s giving them 10.6pts, 3reb while shooting 40% from 3pt...  :P

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Yes, he’s available.  He was on a Covid 10-day with the heat the first week of January.

I’m a huge Stauskas fan, but I’m also aware that a bunch of teams have given him looks and not kept him around, so I don’t actually believe Boston would be any different.  He’s played for 6 teams and been signed by two others before getting cut after preseason.  We’d be his 9th team, and he was in Smart’s draft class.
