Celtics just signed Matt Ryan, a 6'7" shooter from the G-League.

Everything continues to indicate to me that Brad is looking to make a move this summer and isn't 100% focused on this season. I'm really curious what the plan is.

There has been a lot of complaints about the Celtics not signing a "real" NBA player off the buyout market.

Can someone please point me to the "real" NBA player that, and this is important, signed elsewhere and that would have realistically signed with the Celtics and, also important, that is having a positive effect on the team they signed with?

Thanks!

I'm not sure why signing guys to 10-day contracts makes you think he isn't focused on this season.  The trade deadline is passed and the buyout market has been really soft, but anyone who is bought out tonight won't be a free agent until Friday, which is coincidentally the same day we have two 10-day contracts that will expire.  That they haven't signed anyone to a rest of year deal means they're still keeping their options open to fill out the back of the roster this year.

Anyway, the highlights of Matt Ryan's shooting are nice.  His shot is definitely NBA quality, especially his ability to shoot on the move.  I'm guessing that's the only part of his game that's NBA-level, but he's got the size to defend wings at least, so maybe there's some potential to get his defense to playable in the future.

I'm not sure if you can say realistically would've signed can be proven one way or the other. There were a couple of players that might've helped but it was a pretty underwhelming buyout market this year.

Well, Tristan Thompson wasn't realistic. I don't think Dragic was either as he appears to be ring chasing in Brooklyn. Was Bembry realistic? He signed with the reigning champs who have an excellent shot to repeat and had a spot with more playing time available.

So this begs the question, what "real" NBA player would sign here if they know Udoka is most likely never going to use them?

He looks bigger than 6"7" and definitely has a quick release.  Unless the Cs have a blowout soon, he probably won't see the floor anytime soon.

That is a good question. When the rotation is a tight 7 sometimes 8 players there isn't really playing time here. The Bucks, Heat, and Brooklyn use many more players in their rotations due to philosophy and necessity.

What about signing a g-leaguer is an indication of Stevens' summer plans now?

Because virtually everything I've seen Stevens do since he started ensures he's gonna really struggle make a meaningful move any time soon.

We have a ton of money poured into 9 players for next season. We have lousy draft capital. And we no young talent on the bench to sweeten any deal.

If's hard to say.  The two that come to mind are Bembry and Augustin.

Bembry obviously signed in Milwaukee, probably a more clear contender that also had some potential playing time.  Augustin is going to the Lakers crap show, so maybe he would have signed here, but only if we'd offered him playing time over Pritchard I imagine.

Neither seems like they will be a huge loss.

Matt Ryan?  Wow, how unfulfilling.  I guess it is just a 2-way.  We still have one full roster spot open, right?  So for now, we are heading into the playoffs with:

Starters:             Smart, Brown, Tatum, Horford, RWilliams
Rotation:             Pritchard, White, GWilliams
Maybe Rotation:  Theis, Nesmith
Deep Bench:       Kornet, Hauser
10-dayers           Martin, Pitts
2-Wayers:           Thomas, Ryan

Theis and Nesmith are both kind of on the bubble in terms of being in the actual rotation for the playoffs.  Theis is a proven vet so I am giving him the benefit of the doubt and expecting that he would bump up.  Nesmith may still get there this season but he is running out of real estate really fast.

Correct, it’s just a 2-way.  Pretty much by definition you aren’t going to excite anyone with that type of player, but he’s a dang good shooter.

Liked the look of his action in video, but if you're a really good shooter, you should eclipse 38% in the g-league.

Ultimately it depends on shot quality, even in the G-League.  He’s putting up everything just to get noticed.  Rein that in a bit and his percentages will go up.

I’d prefer players that have had some success in the NBA. How about Abdel Nadar or Brad Wanamaker? Both have spent time in Boston already and they are established players. James Ennis wouldn’t be bad either. These are proven NBA players, not G-leaguers.
