The Celtics are trading PJ Dozier and Bol Bol, for a future second, cash to the Magic for a second-round pick, sources tell ESPN. Dozier and Bol are both out for the season. Cost-savings for Boston.

Presumably a top-55 protected 2nd, but fingers crossed we got out 2027 pick back from them.  There had been rumors some teams wanted Dozier’s Bird rights.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Well, that is a relief for those of us who did not want Ross. This could possibly be it for the Cs this deadline. Why make the most obvious cost-savings trade now before exhausting all other options?

It is fine, though. Those roster spots are better off spent on current FAs or potential buy-outs. I mean, would you rather have Brad Wanamaker and Denzel Valentine or two guys who won't play this season?

For those keeping score at home, C’s are now far enough under the tax that Jaylen can reach every incentive and Wyc still will get his $14 million.

Agreed.

So, net, we traded Tristan Thompson , the right for Memphis to swap 2026 #2s and cash for Bruno Fernando, Portland's 2nd rounder in 2023, and whatever the Magic pick is?

Is that right?

The C’s cleared a little extra space and two roster spots, so now any other move today could take back a little extra salary or an extra player.  Or they could do nothing.

That puts the team about $3 million under the tax and opens a couple roster spots.

Seems like the Celtics can now make a trade bring back a bit more money and another player or two....or could sign a guy in the buy out market.

Bobby Marks @BobbyMarks42
The trade puts Boston under the luxury tax

They will also create a $2.1M and $1.9M TE

Bol and Dozier are on expiring contracts

Bol has $707K remaining on his $2.1M contract and Dozier $626K on his $1.9M salary.

Orlando will need to open up 2 roster spots

What other options? We are <3 hours before the deadline.

And that’s generally correct, yes.  I think Stevens did a solid job extricating himself from Thompson, especially with Portland’s pick having potential value.
