Yet another confirmation that Wyc is cheap. Instead of trying to improve the team, we're trying to duck the tax.
If there were a clear way to improve the roster for the long term/set us on track toward contention, I think it gets done.  Problem is, there isn’t such a move out there.
You can't possibly know that before the deadline. Trades are like the game of chicken: Whomever backs down first loses the game. Teams usually wait till the last possible moment before engaging in serious negotiations. This is why the vast majority of trades happen at the deadline.

Basketball-wise, Juancho sucks. Cap-wise, he's a useful expiring contract to have at the deadline. We didn't even give ourselves a chance to use him as salary filler. What this means is we don't care to improve the team. At the very least, our #1 priority is to avoid the tax.

We don’t need salary filler.  Expirings are good when you don’t have TPEs.  The Celtics do, so they don’t need to have expirings to match.  Unless you’re talking about Beal, but Horford matches Beal by himself, so we still wouldn’t need filler.

In the old days where Hernangomez’ non-guaranteed salary next year could count for matching purposes in the offseason his contract would have been a lot more useful even with the TPEs.  But as that’s not the case, Hernangomez was just a guy making $7 million who was glued to the bench.
Let me get this straight: We dump salary cause we want to avoid the tax and you expect us to use the TPE prior to the deadline?

No, I didn't say that.  I said that if the Celtics want to make a trade, they didn't need Hernangomez' salary as filler to do it. You're the one trumpeting his expiring as something of use -- it wasn't.
We both know we won't use the TPE though cause we are cheap. We are already above the tax. Imagine if we used a significant of the TPE as well. What's the point in talking about it as if it's a realistic option?

You’re totally moving the goalposts.  We’re done, you need to chill out about a deal that makes obvious sense to everyone.
Huh? Anyway, feel free not to respond if you don't want to. We don't have to agree on everything.

Never said that the deal doesn't make sense. My point is that we don't care to strengthen the team. Our #1 priority is to avoid the tax. I support the Celtics, not Wyc. Couldn't care less whether Wyc will save money.

I wouldn't expect from the owners to pay a record tax for an underperforming team, but I think it's reasonalbe to expect them to pay a modest tax. We got 2 all-stars in Tatum and Brown. Plenty of teams would envy our position.

Absolutely. I expect him to play regular mins there and take 3-5 threes a game.

I wish Bol Bol had been traded to a different team. I was excited about him going to Detroit. He could have actually earned some playing time on that team (because they are so bad). Maybe shown some development and worthiness of time on a better team.

Not good for Bol Bol to be here in Boston. Little opportunity for playing time here. The big man slots are already clogged with players. Horford, Timelord, Kanter, Grant Williams. A stickman (no physical strength, pushed around like a rag-doll) player like Bol Bol has little chance of beating those guys out for playing time.

It's a bummer he got sent here because it's exciting seeing a guy his size with some skills. I wish that Detroit trade would've gone through.

Not because he is good just because he is fun.

Being in DET wouldn't help him -- he just had foot surgery. He's not playing for anyone.

His opportunity for playing time is next year -- no reason it couldn't be here.

He is not good enough - that is the reason.

Again, he's done for the year.

Next year, Horford and Kanter will almost certainly be gone.

Same problem everywhere else. Maybe there are 2-3 clubs that would simply "invest" minutes into the guy, but not likely. Presumably Stevens wants to give him a look.

Regarding next year, how much better is Bol than Tacko, if at all?

Waste of a roster spot. Can't be trusted in a playoff situation due to his horrific defense.

If you are one of the very worst defensive players in the league (bottom 5 of 450 players), you have to be special offensively (Trae Young). You can't just be good offensively (Bol).

If you are only good offensively, you are still giving up more on defense than you are adding on offense for your team. You are a net negative.

(sigh) ... We just went through this with Jabari Parker.

Waste of a roster spot.

Better.  He can shoot the 3.  Being a tall dude who can shoot from outside and do little else got us very excited about Davis Bertans for a while, and Bol can at least block shots the 1 in 3 possessions he remembers to get down the court and play defense.

Looking ahead to next year, having the Bird rights/qualifying offer to some guys in their 3rd-4th year, coming off injuries could be a nice way to cheaply fill out the back of the roster.  I've been hopeful we could use the Fournier TPE to get someone in a sign-and-trade. This would hard cap the team, so having access to some players like these has a chance to be useful in making a free agency splash via the TPE.

We took Carson Edwards ahead of Bol Bol in the draft, which angered me, but as it turns out neither is an NBA player.  Bol was a tease in Denver, but clearly his numbers are just bad.  He actually has decent ball handling skills, but his lack of physicality, strength and assertiveness has limited his performance.
