This has been an unbelievable turnaround for a team.  I am happy to say that I was part of the minority that didn't fall in to the trap of despair with the slow start.  But I certainly did not expect this much of a turnaround.  It is crazy.

Beyond the "Ime has to go" take, there were some others that have not aged well:

"Tatum and Brown can't play together"

"Marcus Smart needs to be traded because he can't play PG"

and of course the most common one, "we need more shooters".

The last one, every team would like to have better shooting, it was kind of a silly take in the first place, but it turns out we had plenty of shooters, we just needed to execute the offense better and get better looks.

I criticized Ime earlier in the season.

I didn’t/don’t approve of the public criticism of individual players in the media and the short rotation and lack of trust in non-starters leading to in-game collapses and subpar performances. He stopped singling players out in the media and is improving his trust of the bench with his rotation now consistently 9 deep.

I understood that he’s a rookie coach, certain aspects are a work in progress and was willing to give him time to work it out. At the same time, I’ve been an advocate for this roster, knew they were capable of being a great team, and he had to get it together.

All that to say that he’s done an amazing job with this team. He got the defense to consistently play at an elite level, the players to change their default style iso-heavy offense into a winning brand, and has trusted and developed the bench to the point that they’re substantially contributing to the team’s success.

Great job Ime!

Isn't this what the players wanted? I remember hearing a lot of them wanting to be held more accountable. I remember hearing them say they wanted to be coached hard. I never had a problem with it because I always assumed everyone (the players) was very aware of what Ime was going to bring to the table.

Held more accountable and being coached hard isn’t exclusively to be singled out and publicly criticized through the media. It could be “put us through the ringer”, “so and so is blowing too many assignments, get him on the same page”, “so and so is not making the extra pass”, “losing team has to run more sprints”, etc.

Criticized players in the media and you have “Tatum and Brown can’t play together”, “Jayson and Jaylen don’t get along”, and all the other stupid/fake headlines/rumors that have been reported for half of the season.

Have to say I pretty much agree with all of this.

A lot of factors went into the early-season inconsistency - though the elite team defense started showing up long before the climb from play-in team to first-round home court - including injuries and covid; and I don't think that the learning curve getting used to the offense explains Jayson Tatum's epic shooting slump.

Simplifying the roster helped, especially the move to replace the ball-dominant Dennis Schroeder with Derrick White; the team doesn't have to shift styles when Dennis comes in. White is not quite a clone of Smart, but as point guards (or whatever you call them), they operate similarly.

'I was proud of Marcus Smart. He did a great job of keeping us together. He might not get credit for this game, but the pace that he played at, and his playcalling, some of the plays that he called were great. We obviously have to rely on him, so I’m definitely looking forward to Marcus leading this team in that role.' - Jaylen Brown, January 2021

2 best parts of last night that must have something to do with the culture Ime has instilled over the course of the season:

1) 48 minutes of good energy. Never mind the solid D and the execution on O, the team played the whole game - didn’t get cocky or lazy with the lead.

2) The play of the game: Payton Pritchard harassment of Clarkson (I think) and eventual steal, then PP to DW for score — and the Cs bench erupted for Pritchard’s defense and were all over him when Utah called TO just after the score (if I’m remembering the sequence right).  Team was jubilant about the D!

I have to admit I was wrong about Udoka. But to be fair, I also said to myself to give him and the team at least until All-Star break to figure it out. So I was half-right about it.

And I have to say, he's already doing a much better job than Brad ever did. For one, the difference in offensive philosophy is showing already. In Brad's offense, everyone is chucking 3s as long as it is an "open" shot. Ime, in contrast have put much more discipline in Celtic's offense. They are not settling for any "open" shots, but they are looking for the most efficient ones.

I'm pretty confident that there's no longer guys like Morris, Rozier, Kemba and Kyrie shooting us out of the game because our guys are more tru****l to their teammates and much more willing passer than those guys mentioned.

I have to disagree with the 3 point stuff.

I think the difference is just that we're making them now.

Yup yup yup; patience.

Fans kneejerk like crazy. It's almost as if they have never seen a movie where "character arc" was a thing.

Ever seen a movie where a person or a team is losing and losing and losing until suddenly it clicks and they start winning?

That's how that works.

You need adversity to grow. If everything comes easy, you're not going to grow as hard.

The reason the '08 squad was so insanely good, was because these guys had been failing for dang near 15 years.

And developing winning habits? Well that doesn't happen overnight.

Fans also tend to only care about a single statistic. W/L. Which, if you're being fair, isn't all there is to it. You can improve in other areas before that column changes. And if you're too much of a homer, you're going to miss all the individual improvements because all you can do is seethe at the L's.

In fact, if you only care about W/L, you start saying dumb things like "THIS ONE PLAY COST US THE GAME". No it didn't. You lost the game because you put yourself in a position to lose it. If you'd hit literally 1 more shot, you'd be absolutely fine. If you'd gotten 1 extra steal, you'd be fine. If you'd had a hand up on that one shot, you'd be fine. Stop being kneejerky. 1 bad play doesn't mean a player needs to be ran outta town. Especially if they were flawless 90% of the game.

Building a team is about a lot of things. It's about learning more and more about your individuals, it's about discerning their strengths and their weaknesses. It's about finding out how to best help them compensate for those weaknesses, and how to best utilise their strengths. All of that takes time.

P A T I E N C E .

This extends to Theis who's going to still have some bad games. And Derrick White who quite clearly needs to overcome the lid that's on the basket. And Nessie who's trying to stay healthy just like Timelord was at the start of the season.

And heck, even if we don't win it this year, that's just more adversity we can overcome. Lessons to be learned by everyone. Rookie coach included.

Sorry; end of rant :]

Another life lesson there;

Just because you're right about something initially, doesn't make "be patient" the wrong approach.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Thought we'd know that by now.

On internet message boards back then?  What were you on AOL? Digital City Boston?

Those are the wild, wild, west days.  I'm impressed.
