Our problem is, we can’t give him more than around $10 million next season.
In an ideal world, he signs with us for $10 million, and then the following season we give him a big contract starting around 17.5 million. But I don’t know if he will be that patient.
If the Celtics were able to move Hernangomez and Richardson by the deadline for expiring contracts, wouldn’t that allow the C’s to use that money(approximately $19.5 million) to re-sign Schroder? Jaylen is going to be back soon and Josh’s minutes are going to drop significantly, then you have Romeo/Smart for the backup SG/SF minutes.
Also, what’s the deal with Al’s contract? $14.5m guaranteed for next season. Can they restructure?
Anyone have insight on the above? Do the C’s have any options there.
It's all pretty much a big no. First, as Roy pointed out, the Cs cannot offer more than the full MLE (if they get below the tax), which would be around $10M. Even if they made the the proposed trade of Juancho and JRich, let all of their existing FAs walk, and somehow found a taker for Al's $26M, they would still be just under by $11-12M. So they would then need to find another taker for one or two of the young guys. That's a lot to give up.
As for Al specifically, he is worth $26M if we decide to keep him or trade him. It is only if we waive him that he is $14.5M on the books. I suppose we could do that, then re-sign him for the Vet Min, but not sure that would be in his best interest. This wouldn't really help in our pursuit of Schroder, though.
What is really weird is we have this TPE that we can use on literally any other player from any team (making <$17M) without sending out any salary, but we can't re-sign our own player to that amount. I understand that is the rule, but it puts us in a tough spot retaining the player we know actually fits well in our system. That would be an interesting rule change in the next CBA, but I suspect that it is so rare (having a TPE of any consequence - say over $10M or the MLE) that they just won't bother. TPEs are all the new rage, though.
