Smart Foul with 12 seconds left/5 seconds on shot clock

I immediately said why?

Smart wasn't going for a steal on the foul like he did on the previous play that went out of bounds. Smart is a veteran not a rookie or new player.

Udoku said he told players not to foul. Either he's a horrible communicator or Smart has no idea of the situation or BOTH.

After the loss, it was Udoka who took the blame.

"It was not supposed to be a foul," the coach said. "Feel the guys asked me coming out of timeout, I let them know. Just a mistake there."

Udoku added, "That’s something we got to let everybody know and make sure they know. Obviously, with five, six-second differential, we want that last shot. I gotta communicate that to everybody so everybody knows."

What now??? Another team meeting about game situations? Did we blow up this team enough or did we blow up the wrong parts from last season/s?

I'm pretty much done with Smart. For all the talk of "hustle" and "winning plays" which were true for so many years, now he clearly just picks and chooses when to hustle and frankly I recall more losing plays from him over the past few years than winning plays, last night included.

Sure, he'll hit the occasional big 3 late in a game, but that's usually after large stretches of going something like 3-30 from behind the arc which is sometimes why we are trailing in games early.

Now I understand Brown's out, so he'll have to take more shots. But Smart's shooting 30% from the field this season and 28% from behind the arc. Big yikes.

Not to take away from the point being made about his play this season, but he took 5 shots (and 4 FTs) last night, just saying...

He’s the reason they lost, but also one of the reasons they were still in the game. I don’t even mind Smart shooting 6-8 times a game, as long as they are not 3’s. Midrange and in the paint he’s much better.

That big 3 he hit was another one of those “no no no… YES!” shots. It wasn’t a good shot, but he made it.

Granted, Smart isn’t shooting enough to shoot us out of games, he probably takes as many bad shots as Tatum in terms of absolute volume, which is why they stand out.

For example, Smart probably takes 3 bad shots a game, which is big considering he only averages 9 FGA’s (vs Tatum who averages 20FGA). Add to it that Tatum is much more skilled offensively than Smart and we can see why Smart’s bad shots really stand out and why many people think it’s worse than it probably is.

Yeah I’m with you. Voiced this opinion to some friends after the game, more or less. I get it’s part of the experience — you take the good with the bad — etc. — I’m just done with the experience. I’ll forego the good to get rid of the bad. If Smart is traded the other guys will (have to) step up the intensity and effort, but that’s not some huge gap to fill. Media and fans have talked themselves into Smart as the heart of this team as though it’s impossible to exist without him. Other teams manage just fine.

Why do so many on this site always go to: it must be the coach's fault. This was clearly an unSmart Smart play but there were the people in the game thread pushing this off as an Udoka mess up.

I am glad to see Udoka taking the Belichick stance of not throwing his player under the bus and taking blame for needing to coach better. Shows me he might be growing as a coach and learned from his stupid comments on Brown a couple weeks back.

Funny thing though is Smart probably deserved to be thrown under the bus where Brown didn't.

Terrible foul.  I'm pretty down on him too.  I don't feel so down on the previous play where he tried to draw the foul.  That shot had to be taken if C's were going to get a 2 for 1 opportunity (it was at about the 30 second mark).   Smart thought he could draw a foul, and he was right -- he got fouled but no call.  I don't fault him for that.  But Smart's foul in the backcourt with about 7 seconds left on the 24 -- that was just colossal stupidity and really disappointing. 
Smart brings some things to the table and last night was a plus up until that play. But what an absolutely unnecessary bonehead play.

I’ve been done with Smart for a while but this season I’ve lost all patience with him. The play where he tried to throw himself into the defender and chuck up a bait foul was the worst thing I’ve ever seen. Then the foul was ten times worse.

I had some hope of him moving to PG as he’s at his best with the ball in his hands in the paint finishing or distributing. He hasn’t done either and I’m done.

Thanks for this post. I asked the question yesterday - did Smart commit two consecutive fouls???  I did not get an answer. Now you have provided the answer - he did. This puts a big mark on the coaching. Once committed that first foul the entire team should have been told NO FOULS, AVOID FOULING.

Your quote of Udoka contradicts your assertion that he told them not to foul. The quote doesn’t say that. In fact the quote suggests he did not tell them. ‘Got to’ and ‘gotta’ means ya didn’t. The coach shares most of the blame here.

As I said in the Summertime "they shouldn't sign Marcus" . To me , the last 2 years the Bad outweighed the Good, just way too many stupid plays, for me, he's not a Point Guard nor a wing, for that's where you want your great shooters to be , which he's deff not. They should have went after someone like Lonzo Ball to run the Point, IMO, it would have been better for out Team. Now he's a bad signing and I hope he's in a Trade before the deadline. Well, I can hope can't I.

I didn't give an opinion in this post. My quote said its the coach, players or both. My point was someone screwed up. I never pinpointed the coach in that statement.

Smart was going for the steal at the cost of giving up the foul to give. Meaning I was good with going for a steal attempt then at that time at the cost of having a foul called, however the ball went out of bounds and NOT a foul...so he didn't commit two consecutive fouls.
