Team captains I feel are the guys you look to to lead on the court. I'd name Tatum and Brown Captains. Sends a point for players to focus their game through them. And if anyone takes offense they need to be shipped out ASAP. This team belongs to the Jays.
The best players aren’t necessarily the best leaders on a team. Can’t just slap a C on someone and expect them to lead. I think Smart and Horford are good choices.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Nothing good can come from this decision by Ime.

Don’t know why he announced this.

Yeah, unless it's super-duper obvious (best player, undisputed leader), then it seems like it could only cause problems. Like, I wouldn't want to be in the room if Tatum is named a captain and Brown is not. Brown already has enough of a chip on his shoulder by how the media labels these two, I wouldn't want it to be made official by the organization.

That said, if Tatum AND Brown are made captains, then I think that will be the least dramatic, as they are obviously the best players on the team. Also, Marcus just got his extension (feeling respected) and Al is nearing the end of his career.

I’d bet on Smart and Horford if there are two, otherwise just Smart.  There’s a lot already on the J’s plates, and they’ve viewed Marcus as the de facto captain for a couple of years at least.

So the team belongs to Jaylen and Jayson. Celtics go as far as they do, but they make Smart and Horford the Captains? You can’t make Smart a captain over those two. Al, I can see as the sole captain. 15 year veteran and he’s very even keeled.
I would bet on Smart and Horford as being named the co-captains.  The way Udoka was talking, he lumped together MS/JT/JB as "being here forever" but that Horford is another good choice as a 15-year vet and former Celtic. "You can't have 4 co-captains", he said.  That made me think it's going to be one of the trio MS/JT/JB + Horford.  Why choose JT over JB?  Does that serve a good purpose?  Impact on JB?  Hasn't Smart been the de facto captain for a couple of years now?

Yes, my guess is Smart + Horford.

Team Captains in sports is a overrated thing
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin

I can't believe people want Al after he walked on this team.

Well the players understand its business at the end of the day. They can still be close friends and leave for a team that pays them more.

He didn't even give them time to consider 76ers offer. He didn't want to play with the team anymore it wasn't just money. There were reports of them being able to go higher after Kemba was officially made a sign and trade but Al bolted.

I tend to agree. Don’t really see the point of it.

John Karalis: Marcus Smart: “It wouldn’t matter to me if I got captain or not. Having the title captain means nothing. It’s just a title. Anybody can be a captain … we’re all grown here. Gotta go out there and do a job”
Quoting Nick from the now locked Ime thread:

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

So Mr. "Flat Earth, not getting vaxed" had nothing to do with Horford's decision?  Al left a dysfunctional team and is coming back to a better one.

Yeah that team was a pretty dysfunctional team. It had all the talent in the world but everyone’s egos got in the way. Kyrie, Rozier, Morris, and the ever-injured/alleged coach’s favorite Hayward are all gone. This team has a clear pecking order and seems to have good (and more stable) personalities to boot.

pack the captain job with some major responsibilities and you will eliminate most of the contenders.

So a guy who can't manage turmoil when things get tough is the guy to lead?
