I’m fine with Al being named captain, but not really sure if this is necessary or something that will be beneficial to the team. I feel like if there are two captains, core players that are not named may feel slighted and it could cause resentment.

Udoka discussed his approach to captains on Saturday after the Celtics wrapped up their fourth day of training camp, noting that he would likely select two captains ahead of the regular season.

“We’ve talked about it; I’ve talked about it with the staff,” Udoka said. “You got guys who have been here, the core guys, with Marcus, Jaylen, Jayson, they’ve been here forever. But you got a guy like Al who’s coming back and is a veteran presence, veteran voice that they all respect and listen to.

“We’re going back and forth on that. You can’t have four team captains but it’s something that we’ll pick and choose and we know some of the guys off the top that everybody respects and listens to. We’ll just kind of go from there. I haven’t determined it yet though.”

The Celtics have not had a team captain since the 2014-2015 season when Rajon Rondo was named team captain during the beginning of Brad Stevens’ tenure. Stevens did not name a captain replacement for Rondo after he was dealt away to the Dallas Mavericks in December 2014, preferring instead to avoid labels amongst the team leaders during the remainder of his time as head coach.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Team captains I feel are the guys you look to to lead on the court. I'd name Tatum and Brown Captains. Sends a point for players to focus their game through them. And if anyone takes offense they need to be shipped out ASAP. This team belongs to the Jays.

Should it not be a player vote?

Not for me. Most these player's egos are ridiculous and most feel there can't be any one player elevated above them for play or a voice. It's up to management to set the tone or we will get more disfunction again for the 3rd year.

Captain is pretty meaningless in basketball.  I mean, Rondo being named captain his last season here tells you all you need to know.

How do you know such intimate details about their personality? Or are you just waffling on about some nonsense armchair psychology? Sporting teams all over the planet are able to vote for their team captains - why is our basketball team so uniquely egotistical?

Seems like a ridiculous thing to say

I’d bet on Smart and Horford if there are two, otherwise just Smart.  There’s a lot already on the J’s plates, and they’ve viewed Marcus as the de facto captain for a couple of years at least.

It's what a few people that cover the team said about the captain situation. So that's what I am repeating because of it and few players interviews also confirming certain vanities.

So the team belongs to Jaylen and Jayson. Celtics go as far as they do, but they make Smart and Horford the Captains? You can’t make Smart a captain over those two. Al, I can see as the sole captain. 15 year veteran and he’s very even keeled.

Ah, well then, never mind. If the notoriously accurate Celtics media painted such a picture, it must be the case! ::)

Nothing good can come from this decision by Ime.

Don’t know why he announced this.

There is truth to it. Just by the interviews you see guys say they don't want a captain they want their voice to be equal. Then there were the arguments and infighting when BS went that route last two years. There needs to be a common voice and more single direction. You can't have 15 guys all talking about different directions and needs. It's not the way of leadership and cohesion.

Either Brown or Tatum.  I would prefer Brown.  Was Bird ever the Captain?

edit:  I'll answer my own question.  Turns out Bird was the Captain from 80-92.

I generally like the idea of a team's captain being their point guard.

Interesting. I thought it’d be DJ

In any case, I don’t think the captain always needs to be the best player. He needs to be the best leader. That said, I think Horford and Tatum should be named captains if Ime is choosing 2. Horford is the vet everybody looks up to. Tatum needs to be the voice everyone will eventually follow. Both are even-keeled and seem to never panic.
