This season a few laughing stocks of recent years (Suns, knicks, Hawks) had very surprising seasons. This made me wonder what team we think currently has the bleakest situation at the moment. I am sure at least a team since I did this off the top of my head. My thinking it is probably Cleveland or Detroit. (Although if people think Cade is a clear superstar maybe it is just Cleveland). Although there are a decent amount of bad teams I feel like most of them have at least the hope of having a franchise player on their roster (morant, Fox, sga). I don’t think Houston currently has one but believe they have a ton of picks. What do you all think?

Spurs also warranting some serious consideration for me. Not sure who their best player is

I don't think it is Cleveland.  They have a lot of high lottery picks that look at least decent.  Detroit has Cunningham and a lot of flexibility so it isn't them either.

San Antonio doesn't seem to be in a good spot.  I don't think Houston is in a great spot either.  Sure they have a lot of Brooklyn picks, but if they end up hitting on those it will be years in the future as Brooklyn is going to be very good for at least the next couple of seasons.  Orlando isn't look very good.  No great picks, no top end talent to speak of.

I'd say the worst positions in order are

San Antonio
Orlando
Houston
Detroit
Cleveland
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

I am removing Detroit from the group because they have the #1 pick so they are in a good spot right now to build something. The Rockets have the 2nd pick so Evan Mobley makes them somewhat promising.

I would say Cleveland is the worst of that group. I do not see much there to build around long term. San Antonio is the 2nd worst.

I like the Hornets because of LaMelo Ball so they are one step up off the bottom off the barrel. Toronto has Siakam but not much else. The Knicks should not be removed from this conversation. They are still in it alongside the likes of Charlotte & Toronto. They are more of an overachieving mediocrity than a promising up and coming team. RJ Barrett looks interesting. Not wholly on board with Randle.

Sacramento is pretty solid with Fox and Hield. They just have no vision for what to do next.

Yeah so Cleveland and San Antonio are my two picks as the worst of the worst.

I don’t want to edit the poll and change peoples answers but I definitely should have added them on there. They are so irrelevant I literally forgot they existed.

Oh, Orlando - good call. They are a train wreck. At least some of these teams have a top pick or a top young talent. Orlando have none of that. They are right there with Cleveland and San Antonio. Fair chance they are the worst of the 3.

Do you hate toppin, quickly and Barrett? I feel like they also now have a pretty clean cap. Hard to say the Knicks are in awful shape for me.

I went Warriors.

Steph is 33, Klay is 31, Green is 31, bench is meh.  They're an aging team and will they have the ability to sign free agents or make that trade to keep them relevant.  They got lucky with Wiseman, like the Spurs did with Duncan, but what happens Stpeh wants his next contract?  Klay, Wiggins, and Green are 98M against the cap in 22-23.

They also have a top pick this draft.

I like Barrett. I do not care about the two. I only care about the young players that are or look like becoming stars you can build around.

I don't put much stock in the Knicks cap space. Without a top star to draw other stars there, they are not a top destination. They are a second tier landing spot.

I feel like this last season is more over-achievement that has maxed out their talent level than it is a sign of an up and coming team that is going to grow sustainably in the years to come en route to becoming a top team.

Knicks got a lot of work to do. Similar to Charlotte or Sacramento or Toronto -- similar amount of work to do I mean in order to build a top team there.

The Warriors? :o  If everything falls into place for them, I won't be surprised if they win it all next season. Steph was possibly the 2nd best player in the NBA during the regular season, behind only Jokic. They also got plenty of trade assets to make a win-now trade: Wiseman, #7, #14 and Wiggins as salary filler.

Definitely not the Pistons. Imo, they are about to draft a generational talent. I would argue that Cade is the most talented prospect to enter the draft since Luka. If we go even further back in time (excluding Luka), I'd go as far as to say he might be the most talented prospect since Durant. This is how high I'm on this kid! Not to mention, the Pistons also got Jerami Grant and Saddiq Bey. Even Isaiah Stewart is a decent big man prospect. Nothing special, but decent.

Basketball-wise, you guys have already mentioned all the obvious answers. Financially-wise, the team in the worst situation might be the Pels. If there's a team in danger of relocation, it's probably the Pels. At least they got lucky(?) in the Zion lottery.

Completely agree. Tp. Beal is more than likely going to walk, Westbrook has a horrendous contract as does Bertans.  Rui and Bryant are decent young players, but don’t have star potential.

I actually think the Blazers are in a tough spot.  If they keep Lillard they will be perpetually mediocre and his contract is AWFUL going forward.  If they trade him they won't get value back and will be mediocre to awful without great draft asset and in a small market and unable to attract FAs with cap space.

McCollum is a good player but like Lillard they won't get good value for him considering his age and contract.

Oh and they hired a head coach with some baggage.

I think Cleveland has way more then Houston and certainly San Antonio.  The Cavs have the 3rd pick along with Garland, Sexton, Allen, and Okoro.  They are all in their early 20's and all except Allen were top 8 picks.  They have quality younger depth as well in Nance, Osman, Prince, Dotson, etc.  They have Love's bad contract, but otherwise a pretty clean book going forward and they own all of their own 1st's.
