This Brown kid has some great per-36 stats. 14.5 pts / 15 reb / 1.2 stl / 1.8 blk. His ft% improved to 63% too, which is nice because he gets 5 fta per 36.

His assists per 36 are just .4 though, which is unbelievably bad. That is a red flag imo. Hopefully the coaching staff can help there.

I would do this trade.  Brog seems like a great match with the J’s.  But I think Pacers say no.

Makes no sense to go into 21-22 with Thompson, Horford, TL all 3 on the roster.

Someone's got to go. I'd wager that Thompson is traded before the summer is over.

Any deal for an expensive guy with bad knees is a good deal.

They never replaced Horford. An example of Danny's weakness in trading and FAs. He wasn't flexible enough.

Al is a few years older, but he's an important piece up front. At least he's healthy.

Plus, Horford's last two seasons were very low minutes overall. Less wear and tear.

I see this as more of a table setting trade. Hard to say if it's good or not depending what happens next.

Yep, I think this is just the first of a few moves.

We have now cleared some significant money, and we have assets like Tristan Thompson (expiring contract), and with Moses Brown coming in, maybe Robert Williams might be dangled too (since he's due for an extension and Brad may not want to pay him a lot of money).

I like Moses Brown as a prospect, but our current big man lineup is Brown, Horford, Thompson, and Timelord. The problem is, none of those guys can play power forward, so we have a huge logjam. Even if we agree that Thompson is gone, we still have three guys who need minutes at center.

So it is my understanding that [unless we make/win the Finals], Al's contract is only going to be $14.5M for 22-23. However, due to the potential of his deal, his outgoing salary for matching purposes would still need to count for $26M. Is this correct?

Not overly in love with the deal. I was higher on Kemba than most, but this signals to me that the Cs knew something is more wrong with Kemba's knee than they've let on. The $23M cap savings in 22-23 is a big deal and Moses is an actual decent prospect signed for 3 years (convincing myself he's worth the #16).

It should also give us some flexibility in re-signing Smart, Fournier, and TL. Or trading Smart/TT for a 3rd star. Glad to have Al back in town, but I'll miss Kemba. We are going to need somebody with speed who can break down the defense, even if it is just a no-defense bench player (Ish Smith type). Our backcourt is in a precarious position right now, but I'd imagine at least one more trade is happening with TT or TL.
not quite.  that's if we let him go --> his deal is only 50% guaranteed.  we'd have that salary on the books but no Al playing for us.

I'm not sure which part of my comment you are responding to (contract or outgoing trade). If it is the former, this is what is being reported...at least on the front page of CB:

Horford is owed $27 million for 2021-22. He’s got a somewhat complex final year during 2022-23. Horford is guaranteed $14.5 million for that season. That will jump to $19.5 million if the team he’s on (presumably Boston) makes the 2022 NBA Finals. If Horford’s team wins the championship, that final season becomes fully guaranteed at $26.5 million.

I was corrected earlier this season on this site when I assumed that the $14.5M is what he would be owed if his team cut him, but that he would get the entirety of the $26.5M if he remained on the roster. All the responses I see [across various sites] seem to indicate that he will only be paid $14.5M in that last season if we don't make the Finals. And I really hope that is true, because giving up a mid-1st and a seemingly better player just to save $10M/y doesn't quite seem worth it otherwise.
responding based on what I bolded.  From what I've seen, that 14.5 is the guaranteed portion if waived.  put another way, what agent would let his client sign a deal for a potentially huge paycut if his team doesn't make the finals?

I think Brown falls more into that 3rd Center/developmental player role and is a clear upgrade to Kornet, who Brad wouldn't even play when we were down a Center this season. As it stands now, Grant is the hybrid PF/C and that is fine, as long as he isn't be counted on for major minutes.

The Celtics obviously knew what Kemba’s value was around the league, as the team had discussions about trying to trade him during the season. This is why Kemba demanded a trade recently, after learning about this, which only lowered his trade value. Kemba may have been a nice guy, but he was a sieve on defense, didn’t create open looks for teammates, and his scoring was inconsistent. Horford may not be the players he was before, but he should be more reliable on defense, help with passing, and provide easier scoring chances in the paint. As for Moses Brown, I see his inclusion as being the 16th pick in this upcoming draft, but with NBA experience and closer to contributing.

I would like to thank Brad Stevens for getting this trade done today. I’m not sure how many trade ideas involving Kemba, I could have tolerated this off season, especially when the ideas were for players like Lillard, Beal, Simmons, Towns, etc. simply because the salaries were close.

Is this trade done based on 2020-21 salary or 2021-22?  Either way, wouldn't OKC have cap space to do the trade and absorb increase due to Kemba's salary?

Yup. Apparently some Boston writers aren't up to snuff on their cap knowledge and we're just writing stuff to get hits.

Shocking!!!

I know!!!

I don't claim to know anything, but that seems like a really bad take. Not only does he have one of the lowest salaries in the league, but Moses definitely seems NBA caliber. Also, OKC has plenty of cap space...like so much.
