Disgusting that race or gender could be (are?) genuine criteria for getting a job.
I think reality is that there are factors that supersede race, but if those baseline criteria are met, race can be a factor in a close decision. I don’t think it’s disgusting, I think it’s recognition that in a sport dominated by black men that there ought to be some equivalence in management. It’s worth considering why white people were selected for all these decades when perhaps there were qualified non-whites available. Sometimes you have to purposefully iron things out - not btw sacrificing qualifications. In addition it is possible that some players respond to coaches who they perceive may understand them better having lived through some common life experiences (again, that might just be perception- but perception matters).
So experience, x’s & o’s, personality are all primary considerations IMO - all these being relatively equal, race would then be a factor.
