If you get a buyout player,  you shouldn't be able to get another one for 2-3 years.

something like that or a combination of other rules ,  maybe max of seven players in five years per team and no more than two in any one season.

A hard cap would solve a ton of problems.
And no max on individuals. That way stars would have to take a HUGE pay cut to team up with other stars.

Great point , free market ,  if a team wants a player bad enough and willing go all in  ,  pay him,   ....just stick to the cap ...period .  If Lebron is worth the whole cap then let him get paid ,  but max is the max ....LOL he lol be a true one man team

The system is set up to purposely have all the name players playing together in the finals ...EVEN though they had nothing to do with the team getting there.    it’s totally a ploy to exploit famous names to get more TV money and clicks .

we already have n all star game ....leave the finals to to the players that were the core most of the season.

Like NASCAR ,  NBA fiddling with stuff and screwing up true competition.  All about TV ratings and never about what true fans wants
That would actually hurt the small markets though.  I mean when the Bucks pay Giannis 75 million a year they won't be able to build a team around him.

Maybe something like the buy out player has to be signed for a minimum of a 2+ year guaranteed contract so there are longer term salary cap implications for the big market teams. It also mean that players looking to get more than the minimum on their next contract won't want to be bought out because they'll be locked into a small contract for multiple years.

They could also make the new team give their next available 2nd round pick to the team the player with a Stepien like rule to prevent teams giving up picks too far into the future and limiting the number of buy out players that can be signed in consecutive years.

And ...neither will the Lakers ....Lakers only get ONE mega star and not three ....it helps small market teams keep the ONE they have , so Lakers won’t have 3-4 every year!

Everybody is in the same boat ....Lakers can only get one mega star at huge salary ....unless players want to play for a lot less money ,  like Lebron did in Miami ....but that doesn’t set well with the agents , as it cuts into their pay day and all the relatives family or the top five players .

It’s equal .

Might be harsh but what about instituting a policy that if you and your team agree to a buyout during the season you are not allowed to sign with another team until the off season?

Teams trade for these players, these players should play for their team. Yes teams change direction and players get unhappy, but that's the way things go. This would make players think twice about asking for a buyout. Do you risk not playing for half a season or play things out with the team that signed or traded for you.

Despite being harsh, I feel like this isn't super unreasonable. Players union probably would never go for it, but what other cons do you see here?

Basketball isn't worth watching anymore after all these buyouts. And I won't watch the finals just because it's a seven game series between two all-start teams. LAL vs Brooklyn. Two players I hate the most. No thanks. Hope the ratings tank but I doubt it. It's a pretty good matchup but I still won't watch.
I'm also done with baseball for pulling the all-star game and draft out of Georgia. And also the fact that Lebron is part owner of the Saux.
Who's next? Not sure I can drop my Pats (not until BB retires at least) but the rest of football....maybe. Keep kneeling but don't forget where your paycheck comes from.

The concept of the buyout and all is good in theory .....but it is always the same 1-3 teams that get all the buy out star players every year .  so what you wind up with is the same teams going though the best players every year ....and now it’s getting  to the point some playerS are revisting the Lakers for multiple times .

maybe we should not have a USA league anymore ,  but a world league ,  country vs country and LA can be the home team ....since none of the super star s don’t Want to live anywhere else anyway.  even if you have a winning team ,  the players still quit to live in LA ...so what do you do .

Exactly what it’s become , unwatchable unless you live in one of thoSe two cities.  I mean , the finals are almost totally predictable, and you know where all the players will run to .

I won’t watch any and not even read about it .  it’s a contrived joke of a sport especially since Lebron arrived ....common sense just flew out the window .

The easiest fix is to move the deadline for a free agent to be signed and eligible for the playoffs prior to the trade deadline, and not afterwards.  That would cut down on players signing for the money with a small-market team and then demanding a buyout if not traded to the contender of their choice.  Could maybe make an exception for players who were traded at/near the deadline, so that someone traded as salary-filler who is of no interest to their new team can sign elsewhere (e.g. Jeff Teague).

Saw this on Yahoo Sports..Small market teams wants the NBA to change the rules of the buyout market...well, quit buying players out and that solve the problem..either trade them or keep playing them till season over

They are usually bought out by bad teams. And these teams have nothing to show for it. Except wasted money

A conditional 2nd or cash  as compensation makes sense

I think instead of buyouts they should steal something from baseball, teams sending out players but agreeing to pay most of the salary.  So a team that that is currently paying the rest of the contract over the years would still pay that much.  The team that would have signed the bought out player now trades for them and pays the rest.
