If you're a contender, why would you trade assets to a team for a guy they'd likely buyout if he lasts past the deadline?

There's an argument for just keeping the player but in the player empowerment era, small market teams can't really take the risk of angering players or agents. Just look at JJ Redick - he's trashing David Griffin and New Orleans management as untrustworthy because they didn't buy him out or trade him to a NY/Boston team despite none of those teams offering deals that made sense for New Orleans.

I think small markets should want a whole lot more change than just buyouts.

Totally agree.

Having two teams in LA and NY ....just made a bad situation WORSE ....now double the amount of stars are taken from the rest of the league.

It has gotten ridiculous.  maybe there should be a league for NY and LA ,  and another one for the rest of the cities.  or ....just remove LA from the league or move them back to Minn .  And I guarantee the league would automatically be strengthened from top to bottom.

Don't buy players out or don't give contracts in the size or to players that would require a buyout in the first place.  Problem solved.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
They could always implement a waiver claim with a ranking system from worst to best. I understand that any team already has the right to claim a waived player, but I think the point is that nobody wants these players at their salary and that is why they are bought out in the 1st place.

If you get a buyout player,  you shouldn't be able to get another one for 2-3 years.
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.

A hard cap would solve a ton of problems.
And no max on individuals. That way stars would have to take a HUGE pay cut to team up with other stars.

But that isn't the same thing.  If you want to buy someone out, go ahead, just don't complain when the player wants to go to a team that contends.  Because you see this isn't a small market vs large market thing, this is a contender vs. non-contender thing.  And we know this because the 4 years Lebron was in Cleveland (after Miami), Cleveland consistently signed buy out players.  Is Cleveland a large market, no?  It is just the players that get bought out know they are going to play the rest of the season for the minimum, so if the salary is the same, they are going to go to a winner and the winners more often than not are in the larger markets.

Great point , free market ,  if a team wants a player bad enough and willing go all in  ,  pay him,   ....just stick to the cap ...period .  If Lebron is worth the whole cap then let him get paid ,  but max is the max ....LOL he lol be a true one man team

The system is set up to purposely have all the name players playing together in the finals ...EVEN though they had nothing to do with the team getting there.    it’s totally a ploy to exploit famous names to get more TV money and clicks .

we already have n all star game ....leave the finals to to the players that were the core most of the season.

Like NASCAR ,  NBA fiddling with stuff and screwing up true competition.  All about TV ratings and never about what true fans wants

It wouldn’t solve this problem tho.  Teams would just leave room for 2-3 buyouts, exactly as the hard-capped Lakers have done.

Which is not so bad ,  they paid a price using bad players for the reg season.

Maybe a max number of buyouts per season per team or such ,  but the hard cap is the way to go or just say Lakers will be in the Western finals every year and forget it.
