I think part of the reason that Ainge has not gotten quality depth is directly related to what happened with Marcus Morris (and perhaps what is happening with Marcus Smart).

The Js are the future. The offense needs to be patient and feed them the ball. Too many veteran role players are too aggressive to try to prove themselves offensively, which makes the offense less patient, gives less touches to the Js, and lowers the ceiling of the offense overall. This is the main problem with many, many NBA players. They have undeniable talent, but they languish on bad teams because they feel like they have to prove their mediocre talent.

Thad Young and PJ Tucker are two guys who seem to be able to keep their usage low to accommodate players around them. I love the idea of Harrison Barnes next to Brown and Tatum, but ever since he left Golden State, he's been trying to prove he is a go-to scorer, and the teams he has played for have struggled because of it. If he was willing to limit his shot creation (we could use some, but not as much as he has grown accustomed to) and focus on defense and corner 3s, then he'd be perfect.

If the Celtics were able to pick up a player like the Warriors did when they got Andre Igoudala, that would be perfect. What player out there helps his team win games, but clearly isn't comfortable shooting as much as he currently does, and would love to play around high usage guys?

Ironically, I thought Gordon Hayward could be perfect. I do think Kemba Walker is a good natural fit. SGA is one guy who came to mind. He reminds me a lot of Andre Igoudala from his Philly days. He's probably underqualified to be a franchise cornerstone, but he'd be a great fit as a low usage guy and switchy defender. But OKC isn't trading him yet. Malcolm Brodgon fits this mold of player, but even with Levert out, I don't think Indiana will become sellers. Jrue Holliday is probably the closest to this type of player, but the Bucks aren't selling unless a catastrophic injury happens. Ben Simmons is another guy that comes to mind, but he is not really within reach and is probably a little overqualified for what we are talking about here.

Completely agree with this assessment.   Any guy that we get needs to understand their role on this team and not be looking to maximize his future earnings.  Thus, while I would love to add Collins, I don't think that he would defer to the Js as he is looking for his next contract.  And, he would be looking to leave this team to go somewhere he would be the #1 or #2 option (similar to Gordon).  With this in mind, we need to look for guys who understand their role and are secure in playing it for the monies they are receiving it to do so.  So, I'd look for guts who have longer term contracts and aren't playing for a contract.  P.J. Hunter would be ideal even though he is playing for a contract as he only cares about being paid to play his role.  I think JJ would assimilate with our group as well.  Not so sure about Vucevic or A. Gordon.

I’d be lying if I said I’d seen Tucker or House ( saw the #’s down, injuries) this year but I’d like the last versions I’d seen a lot here in Boston.

Neither Collins or Barnes is realistic without giving up Smart and picks. Would you?

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I guess I am going to continue to stick with Justise Winslow, but I sure wish he would actually play basketball again on an NBA court (he's aiming to return this month).

Barnes would be a great get if we could offload Thompson's contract to stay under the tax. Collins is probably the ultimate prize.

I wouldn’t only because I don’t think Collins would be happy with the shots he got. Barnes I think I’d pass. I’m not be t on keeping Smart but I think I’d rather trade him for something different than these two particular guys even though I think Collins is the better player.

I would absolutely trade Smart for Collins. I'd be surprised if there are folks here (or NBA GMs) who wouldn't.

Thad Young from the Bulls

I say this not because he is the best player but because I feel it is realistic (for a #1 and some of the Hayward TPE) and because he would be helpful both playing as a big (our greatest need) and also as a wing (our second biggest need).
have always been a big Thad supporter.  would love to get him but I just don't think he's on Danny's radar or will be made available in a deal

I am curious why you think CHI would not want to make him available?  Realistically, all we can offer is draft picks if we want to use the TPE.  Maybe that isn't enough but I am not sure he returns anything better from other teams.

As to whether he is on Danny's radar or not, who knows.  I think more likely even if he is on Danny's radar, everyone will just wait, no one is going to be in a rush to make the first deal.

Ironically, to fly in the face of the thread title, I’m going to list multiple guys I really want.

Vucevic is probably my paramount want. I feel like his post-offence both high and low, alongside his shooting and passing would make our offence crazy good. The big rim protectors like Embiid, Lopez & Turner (or Sabonis, in which case Turner will be on one of the Jays) can’t afford to help off him either, which would be super open.

Collins would be a similar want. Different kind of offensive prowess, but he could also play alongside Theis / Timelord / Thompson.

Big wings like Aaron Gordon and Harrison Barnes would be amazing lower-level targets to add versatility on both ends for us. Could either start or come off the bench.

Would also love a bench shooter like Ellington or Terrence Ross.

Realising now that I’ve listed a boatload of Magic players. Funny
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

Swing for the fences would be Beal. Would do Smart, Walker (probably need 3rd team for Walker with them already have Westbrook) and a first or two for him.

I’d make a smaller deal for either Cousins or Whiteside. Neither are getting the playing time they deserve on their current teams.

I like Smart and pick(s) for Collins using TPE, or Kemba and Timelord for Randall and Burks. NY can absorb the extra salary.

LeBron if we’re in win now mode but SGA or Adebayo if we want to build a dynasty.
