If the bulls aren’t going to resign Markkanen would they be interested in picking up two young guards on longer rookie deals? Markkanen would be a really nice stretch 4 for the Celtics.

I'm suspecting with a new regime in Chicago that Markkanen gets a long strong look before his name comes up in cut the bait.
ok fine

Interesting. I kind of like the idea of a lineup of:

Thompson
Markkanen
Tatum
Brown
A healthy Walker

I think that Langford and Edwards is unrealistic. Smart would work but it looks as though that we would have to match up the salaries with either an expanded trade or take back filler.

My gut feeling is that Danny would never do this kind of  deal since it's not a complete fleecing. Giving up Smart is a serious move. He is a very useful player but power forward has been a real problem for us. Having a big front line while moving Tatum and Brown down to the 3 and 2 seems like a good move.

My deal was a complete fleecing so maybe Danny does it.

Agree entirely. I would do your deal in a heartbeat, but would Chicago?

Looks like there has already been speculation about Markkanen to the C's.  Maybe this is what generated the idea for the thread?

https://www.nbaanalysis.net/2020/12/17/this-bulls-celtics-trade-sends-lauri-markkanen-to-boston/4/

I hadn’t seen this trade but I think it’s an overpay.

The proposed trade is Romeo Langford, Grant Williams, Aaron Nesmith, 2021 1st Round Pick  for Markkanen .  I prefer this to giving up Marcus Smart, but it is a lot.  If we could get him for Romeo Langford and Carsen Edwards, great, but doubt that would fly with CHI.

I actually don't see why they would trade him in any case unless it is part of a deal for say Harden.  He is a RFA after this season, a promising young 7-footer on a rebuilding team.  I think unless CHI is blown away, they won't trade him.  And for us, even if he turns out great, how do we resign him?

Don't see it.

Romeo is a bust and injury prone...no one will touch him . Bulls will laugh at that offer.
you draw this conclusion after a single season in the nba for langford (and only 32 games at that)? i know CS loves hot takes and declaring rookies as boom/bust, but even by our standards this is a rush to judgement that is borderline silly.

next, markkanen would be great on offense on the celtics. defense? not so much. see this article...

https://pippenainteasy.com/2020/06/16/chicago-bulls-3-areas-where-lauri-markkanen-needs-to-improve-the-most/4/\

"This is something that he never really excelled at. His defensive box plus/minus rating is improving, (around 0.4 percent per season), but he is still in the negatives. His defensive rating also has yet to get below 110.

Opposing shooters do love to have Markkanen defending them, especially from two-point range."

next, i do not think markkanen would match smart's contribution to winning. i value what smart brings on defense and as a team leader.

oh, as as vermont green writes above, how do the celtics resign markkanen? maybe it is possible. can anyone figure out a realistic way to make salaries work?

I like Markanen. He seems like a better Olynyk to me. I would certainly be for bringing him here at the right cost. If it could be done keeping the core intact (Tatum, Brown, Walker, Smart) and keeping Nesmith and Theis, I’d do it.

Dude they're also getting edwards who did score 30 pts. In a preseason game once.

I don't see why we're settling for markenen when there's players like kawhi and lebron out there.

This offer is too light to get Markkanen. No doubt.

But I wouldn’t call Romeo a bust yet. A bust is a player who’s been healthy, given chances, and shown nothing - James Young. Romeo, when healthy, is clearly an NBA defender and shows good ball-handling and feel for the game. Can he stay healthy enough to develop is a legitimate question, but I don’t think we know yet.

We probably have to keep him through this year, at least - best case, he gets healthy and plays well through the year, upping his value.

Romeo hasn’t done anything yet, that I agree with. But you can’t call him a bust yet. A busy is a player who’s been healthy, given chances, and shown nothing - James Young. Romeo, when healthy, is clearly an NBA defender and shows good ball-handling and feel for the game. Can he stay healthy enough to develop is a legitimate question, but I don’t think we know yet.

I think it is very clear what Langford has shown and not shown.  I feel he has shown that he can play at the NBA level even in one injury-interrupted season, including some decent minutes in the playoffs.  That is more already than James Young ever was able to show and more than many 20 year old rookies show in their first season.

What Langford has not done is show that he has the physical durability to stay on the court or get through an NBA season.  That he still has to prove and until he does, there will be a question mark attached to him (rightly so) and will diminish his trade value.

To jump to a conclusion of either extreme, bust vs. budding star, is just silly.  It is still very possible he is a bust but if he is, it will be because of durability, not skill or ability.  I feel it is a bit early to give up on him though.  I believe he has a decent chance to become a very good player, a starting level wing, in the next couple of seasons.
