  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
So he'll request a trade in two years now?

That's a cynical way to look at it. But he really seems to want to be there and isn't just playing the media game like other stars.

Well, even if he does, at least MIL can obtain a record amount of compensation. I'm really happy to see Giannis stick around, as a superstar signing with another team - and leaving their old team high and dry - is a good way to break the NBA. Glad to see the supermax contract actually work for a small market team, too. This is exactly why it was put in place; but guys like AD, Kyrie, etc wanted out so much that they were willing to give up all the extra money.

I think this means Miami is all in on Harden now that Giannis is out of reach as a FA.

Herro/salary filler and picks/swaps for Harden will be Miami's offer.  I actually hope it happens. I don't see Butler and Harden playing nice in the sandbox.

Houston will ask for Bam but I don't see Riley giving up Bam.

Bam is hard to trade because he just signed his extension, so there's the poison pill provision to work around. Dragic also can't be traded until February.

Miami right now can offer Herro/Duncan/Nunn/Iggy/Olynyk assuming Harden waives his trade kicker. That's not awful. That's not great either. I like Herro enough to prefer this package over Brooklyn's pu pu platter, though.

The remaining Miami team would feature Dragic/Harden/Jimmy/Bam as the core with decent complementary pieces in Avery Bradley and Mo Harkless.

HOU has enough leverage to reject the MIA offer.

I'm not saying the should take. That's just what Miami can offer at moment.

Part of the problem with Miami's offer is the inability to offer as much draft compensation, because they already traded many of the first and second round picks.

Still, if Houston thinks highly enough of Herro (I don't, but they might), maybe they would consider that the best offer.

Now that Giannis re-signed with the Bucks, I wonder how long the Lakers wait till they wave Kostas Antetokounmpo. :P

The Lakers were out of it as soon as James and Davis signed their extensions. They didn't have the cap space anymore.

Really shocked by this, arguably the best player in the NBA committing to a low market team for the prime of his career.
I wonder if the BAM extension was the final driver for him to do this? Miami being unable to afford him that is.

Regardless really happy for Giannis and the Bucks, loyalty in today's NBA in non-existent especially to a team like the Bucks. Really a class act move for a player who could have created the next super team of his choice in a major market.

Giannis and Bam have same agent. I’m betting Heat knew that GA would sign before they extended Bam.
I think the minute they made the Holiday trade everyone knew Giannis was signing the extension because there is no way Milwaukee does that trade without knowing that Giannis is signing the extension.  It is like the Clippers and the Paul George trade.  There is no way the Clippers make that trade unless it also lands them Kawhi Leonard.  Milwaukee does not do the Holiday trade without knowing Giannis is signing the max extension.

He signed a new 2-way contract with the Lakers on November 26. Cap space was never an issue. He's paid next to nothing (by NBA standards).

They have apparently asked for Simmons and 3 1st round draft picks from the Sixers.  They aren't taking that trade if that is the ask from the Sixers.

As much as I'd love to have Giannis on the Celtics, if he can't be here, I'd rather he stay in Milwaukee, as I consider the Bucks a classic franchise, and the people of Milwaukee and Wisconsin deserve a good team.

Plus, the Lakers and Heat lose out, lol.

I agree with all of this.  I am glad he stayed put, even thought that means we have to get by him in the playoffs.

Good for the bucks!

Have you noticed how successful international players don’t go chasing after cities like LA or NY and such?

Most stay where they were drafted.  It’s not  always about “the brand”.

I find it refreshing.

I can guarantee you if that was AD as opposed to Gianis; he would have force a trade to NY or LA.

Glad Gianis stayed in Milwaukee.

Agree with your take on international players. If Giannis hadn't signed this contract extension he could've set a bad precedent/tone for international players who btw are not very particular about living in the warm weather of LA and Miami. For as long as they are wanted by their current team and loving fans and getting the salary they demand, they stay and really play hard.

Classy Giannis. Very good for the NBA.

Who exactly are these international players you refer to?  I mean Dirk stayed in Dallas, which isn't exactly small, and they always had a winner and Manu stayed in San Antonio, of course San Antonio was a dominant title winning team and TD also stayed there (Parker did as well for years, though did leave at the end).  Who are these other international players you speak of?  Nash left Dallas for Phoenix.  Embiid and Towns aren't at the point when most players that leave, leave i.e. the 3rd contract.  Porzingis demanded out of NY because they were so poorly run, so I guess he counts for this discussion since he left NY.  Dragic moved around as a free agent.

Antetokounmpo said he consulted his mother throughout the process before securing a deal that'll create generational wealth, if managed properly.

"I talked to my mother, asked her, did she want to move? She said, 'No.' So I said, 'OK, cool. I'm just going to sign the deal then.' But, no, this is the place I want to be," Antetokounmpo said. "This is my home. This is my city. I want to represent Milwaukee, and I want to do this for the next five years."
