So, is this Steven Adams extend-and-trade just the 3rd one in NBA history? I can't think of any besides the KG and Melo ones

2 years $35m seems like a bit of an overpay, unless New Orleans really believe he can be that 14/10 guy with the improved passing he showed this year. Interesting fit, but glad for Adams - seems like one of the good guys of the NBA

I like the contract. $17.5m is a good number for Adams.

I do not like the fit though. I would have preferred to see New Orleans go after Myles Turner instead. A jump-shooting big is a much better fit next to Zion Williamson than a paint dweller / rim runner.

Atlanta made the same mistake with John Collins by putting Clint Capela next to him.

No!

You gotta free those guys (Collins, Zion) up. Open the paint and let them attack. Look at how much it has helped Giannis in Milwaukee. Get that spacing right. Let those guys use their insane athleticism and one-on-one skills to attack the rim. They are incredible. Let them shine. Don't hide them away. Don't downgrade their game. Don't hide them away behind garbage men type players.

Show their game.

Heat just extended Adebayo with max deal. A sign Giannis is staying in MIL going forward?

https://twitter.com/shamscharania/status/1331308570403594243?s=21

Does that kill their potential cap space? Riley is always resourceful

Seems that either they heard GA is signing max with Bucks (unlikely) or figure GA is going to be traded before becoming an UFA, in which case Bam contract would be a great trade chip.  Just speculating here.

If GA doesn't sign max, have to figure Celtics will make a serious trade offer of everyone on team (including Brown and Smart) except Tatum.

Considering Bam and Giannis share an agent, this may be pointing towards Giannis signing the supermax.

Read somewhere yesterday that Davis and Bam were waiting to see what Giannis did before they decided on a five year or a 1+1.  The article was basically just talking about what Windhorst was saying on some show.  I think if they did the 1+1 it would allow their teams to work some cap magic and possibly sign Giannis next year or the year after.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I'm not a huge MIA fan or anything, but happy to see them do the right thing by Bam. Messing around and 'promising' to sign a max contract next off-season just gives the player (Bam) the wrong impression on what their priority is. So many things can go wrong - injuries, down year. Also, if you were a Heat fan, would you want to wait? Imagine if the Cs didn't offer (and sign) Tatum the max extension.

I think Adams is a great player who will bring defense and dirty work to help establish a winning culture for their young guys to get used to.  I don't know if these next 2 years is exactly their "window" so I wouldn't be concerned about overpaying him for them.  The amount of money on a short-term contract could be useful in fitting into a trade if needed.  For example, could they sign a high priced free agent next season with cap room, then package Bledsoe + Adams for another max-type player right after?

Edit:  I forgot about Ingram's contract, so probably not enough cap space.  So that package might be their only means of acquiring another star.

I don't think delaying it would really help anyway. They would presumably give him a max qualifying offer next summer, so his cap hold would be equal to 25% of the cap anyway. If the extension turns into 30% of the cap (not sure if they signed one that could), then they lost out on ~$6 million, would that really stop them from signing someone like Giannis?
I'm bitter.

Isn't the cap hold tied to the prior year salary?

Giannis should sign the supermax regardless. He can always demand a trade afterwards if he's not happy with the Bucks roster.

It can be, but if you have a max QO extended, that number would be used instead.  From the CBA FAQs:

Quote
A restricted free agent is included in team salary by the greatest of:

His free agent amount (as defined in the table above)
The amount of his qualifying offer (see question number 42)3, but not a Two-Way qualifying offer (see question number 82)
The first-year salary in a first refusal exercise notice (a notice given to the player that the team is exercising its right of first refusal by matching an offer sheet (see question number 42)

3 This implies that the free agent amount for a player receiving a maximum qualifying offer would be the maximum salary.
I'm bitter.

Sacramento won’t match the Bogdonavic offer.  Typical Sactown.

I do. They wanna build around Fox and Bagley, those guys will both be elite year after next, and then they will add vet FAs.

Good decision frankly.

Letting an asset walk for nothing when there was widespread trade interest isn’t a good decision in my mind.  $18 million per year is a reasonable contract and several teams were interested.

Match the deal and trade him in three months if you want to move on.

Only 163m?  Why not up to 190 plus million Tatum signed?

Is there a player option?

I really dislike that player option Danny gave Tatum

IF Danny insisted he could not provide that option.  Tatum would have still signed that deal

Goodwill? I remember that Utah cheated out on Hayward and made him sign an offer sheet with another team and he left first chance he got. Well, I guess he left here too, so...
