Meh. I believe this sums it up perfectly.
Imo, we had 2 needs going into the offseason:
1. Upgrade the C position. I don't think we could have found an immediate upgrade at C via the draft.
2. Add a shooter off the bench. We nailed it! Nesmith may be the best shooter in the draft.
That being said, the way the draft played out, I think we should have traded up for Haliburton. Given that we stayed put, I would have drafted Saddiq Bey at #14. I'm OK with Nesmith. He would have been my 2nd choice.
Pros
- projects to be an elite shooter
- happy to play off the ball (synergizes perfectly with his shooting ability)
- projects to be a good team defender
Cons
- tunnel vision
- limited ball handling skills
- can he stay in front of guards on defense?
- minor injury concerns. Had surgery last January for a stress fracture in his foot. Is he injury prone? The stress fracture is no big deal. He should be 100% ready for next season.
All in all, I see him as a high floor, low ceiling 3+D type of guy. I think he's a tiny bit undersized at the 3. Not sure whether he's explosive enough to play D at the 2. I reckon he'll be a terrific shooting specialist off the bench next season.
I've never seen Prichard play. Not even in highlight videos. Is he better than Wanamaker? He sure is a lot younger.
I don't like the (rumored) trade.
#30 + Poirier for 2 future second round picks from the Grizzlies
The Griz almost made the playoffs last season. Chances are the 2 seconds will end up somewhere in the late 30s - late 40s range.
