On The Bill Simmons Podcast (starts at 56-minute mark), Ryen Russillo reported that Hayward "does want out" of his deal for the 2020-21 season.

As Ryan Bernadoni of the Locked On Celtics Podcast noted (h/t John Karalis of MassLive.com), Hayward wouldn't earn $34.2 million next season because of how the salary structure will likely be set up

No way is Hayward opting out, unless it's to renegotiate his contract and stay in Boston.

No one should be surprised by this. He should want a longer contract. Opting in is far more dangerous than him getting a good contract right now.

If they really are going to be holding a lot more money in escrow this year, then that makes sense. The $34 million cap number is a bit of a lie if basketball related income drops significantly.

This probably also means he'd be looking for a back-loaded deal, which could be good for us this year, but not long term (since year to year salary raises/drops are limited to 8% of the first-year value)
I'm bitter.

No way is Hayward opting out.

He is if he has a wink wink deal in talking with another player.

This is fine as long as "out of his deal" doesn't mean "out of Boston" as well.

Which I don't see why he would want out.

Why on earth would the Hawks do this? They can sign him via cap space.

Good point. I think it will depend on how they structure the escrow. If they spread the COVID losses over several seasons rather than this coming, which is what the PA wants, then less likely Hayward opts out. Right?

I think he is opting out because he (and his family) want out of Boston.
Maybe he doesn't have much hope in himself to earn a great contract after next season and would rather cash out of 34 mil next year to get 4 years 25mil elsewhere.

No way I give him a long term contract..save that money for Tatum and other players
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin
