In case you have not noticed Jayson Tatum has had an incredible year so far for the Boston Celtics. The best of his short three year career. He has made strides in most every major category you can think of. And you can see the way he has played so far impact the success of the Celtics.

With all of this being said, why are there still some people who say he will likely get one? If he does not get one, then there is a major issue. The Celtics would have a major issue.

This guy here is the future of this ball club. He is emerging as one of the best two way players in the sport, and he is only going to keep getting better and better. He deserves a max deal and he will get one.

These are my thoughts. Curious to see what others have to say.

I think your title and a sentence or two in your post are missing the word "not".

It seems the OP is taking issue with what they perceive as people using the qualifier 'likely' when there is no doubt Tatum will get a max contract, thus people need to stop saying 'likely'.

Thank you.
'I was proud of Marcus Smart. He did a great job of keeping us together. He might not get credit for this game, but the pace that he played at, and his playcalling, some of the plays that he called were great. We obviously have to rely on him, so I’m definitely looking forward to Marcus leading this team in that role.' - Jaylen Brown, January 2021

Maybe, but if that's the case then he is missing the word "only" instead of "not".

It's just confusing as it's written.

I think its a foregone conclusion that he's getting a max deal. Danny is cheap and tough, but he's not dumb. He has pretty much nailed the fair value of each player he has ever considered re-signing.

Yeah, his contracts for home-grown talents like Smart & Brown have been perfect IMO. A max for JT is perfectly suitable.

Qualifiers make sense.  Nothing is ever guaranteed until it’s a done deal.  “Tatum will get a max contract unless...”  If you could think of any possible way to finish that sentence, then the max contract is likely but not guaranteed.

I honestly don't think there is an unless.  Even a major injury I don't think stops him from getting a max.  It would have to be basically a career ender and I just don't think that is worth a qualifier.

It's gonna happen.  Danny would be nuts not to.

Tatum is the present & the future of this basketball team.

Maybe two weeks ago, I saw one of those Google “articles for you” pop up on my phone, with a headline of something like Tatum getting max deal. Instead of clicking on the article, I immediately went to this site to join in on the discussion, but saw nothing. Then I went to ESPN and was hoping to see one of those breaking news banners, but nothing again. Finally I went back to the original article, where it was mentioned that Tatum will likely receive one at some point. Maybe the author’s next article will be a breaking news story that water is wet. I agree with the OP, this is not news worthy.

I think a ruptures Achilles, ACL or MCL that causes hi to miss most or all of  next season would probably be enough that he doesn't get a max deal. Keep in mind the cap will now likely be falling (or at least stalled) due to no fans in the arena which will mean that few teams will have the money to make him a max offer. Combined with the uncertainty of an injury and I think he'd have to take a "prove it" deal. But of course injury aside ya, he'll get the max.

It will be interesting to see how he plays once he gets played.
I hope he is ready for the playoffs. Cannot wait to see him ball out there.

Also, going back to earlier, I agree that a skinny harden actually may be a disadvantage. What I cannot figure out is why he did it. I know he has all this time and could really focus in and lose the weight, but I never thought it was necessary.

He seemed like he was in good shape and never looked that big.

Now he just seems to skinny for his body.

Who knows, though?
