With the 5th pick of the 7th round Indiana's reuniting Dirk with an Old Friend Tyson Chandler:

As a Defensive Player of the year AND a Big who TALKS on defense like KG Tyson will make our defense even better and help Joel out.
Strong selection at this point of the draft, I think Chandler was a top 25-30 player at his peak.

Thanks.

Was surprised at his 3rd team All-NBA selection as well.

He reminded of KG towards the latter half of his career...I always saw him talking on defense much like KG did.

I think he'd serve as a good mentor to Joel as well.

I thought Camby peaked in New York rather than Denver. He played fundamentally sound defense for Van Gundy. In Denver, he was stat-padding for blocks and rebounds instead of playing solid D. That is why Denver did not miss his D after he left for nothing in a cap dump.

Criminal that Camby got a DPoY and Duncan did not.

Edit: Camby was arguably the best player on that Knicks team that made the Finals in 1999. He was phenomenal for the Knicks during that run. Killed Indiana.

My favourite little weird fact about Chandler is that in the year he won DPOY he didn't make All-Defensive First Team (he made 2nd team). Made the First Team the next year though.

How did that happen?

I think that happened the year Marc Gasol won it as well.

High value pick right there with McDyess. Nice one.

I wanted a starting point guard who can play defense, shoot, and move the ball without being ball dominant.

I was surprised to find that in the history of the NBA, only three players have achieved the following stats for a season:

6.0 assists per game
2.5 3PM per game
40% 3P%
.600 TS%

Steph Curry, Kyle Lowry and...

Mike Conley

Conley is also the only one who has made an All-Defense team.
Checked basketball reference season finder.  Curry did it 5 times and Lowry did it once but Conley wasn't listed.  Rounded up Conley did it in 16-17 but he was actually 2.478 on 3PM per game.

I was thinking the .60 TS% was the limiting factor but when I removed it only 8 seasons were listed (an additional Curry and an Irving).  When I removed the 2.5 3PM per game instead, 36 season were listed.  Confirms how the game has changed in recent times and that Curry is a shooting god.

I accidentally did 6 TRB instead of 6 AST at first.  Only 3 seasons appeared (Peja, KD and KAT).  Another fumble fingers showed that Lebron and Bird (twice) are the only ones with 6 TRB, 6 AST, .40 3P% and .60 TS%.

All excellent picks thus far but there is one player I thought should have gone early this round that had a season that is better than most everyone's this round.

With the 7th pick, the LA Clippers bring back a favourite son who was ahead of his time.

We select:

Lamar Odom
Very strong pick, I was looking at him as one of my potential selections the next round.
I love what he brings tbh. Just a fun player who had some really good seasons
Yeah, his qualities scale well too (except for his sketchy shooting).
Jaylen Brown for All-NBA

I think that sort of thing happened one year with Russell and Wilt too where one of them won the MVP but did not make First Team All-NBA.

I don't think I was surprised by his selection, he was the finest rim non-Dwight protector back then. Massive impact on defence (or as much as a non superstar guy can have).

If it’s the guy we talked about, Yoki should take him.  I worried people would hyper-focus on his weaknesses rather than strengths.

No doubt, his shooting was super erratic. Huge % jumps season to season, but I'll be adding some shooting help later ;)
