As nice as these donations are from players/teams to the arena workers, I wonder if there will be any disconnect between expectations and what is actually received.

Take Zion's pledge for instance, paying arena staff for 30 days.  Well the Pelicans have 9 home games in that time frame, but the Smoothie King Center has at least 8 other events scheduled (WWE, concerts, NCAA basketball).  So is Zion expecting to pay just for those 9 game days, or those 17 total event days, or all 30 days even if no events were scheduled?

Maybe not Zion specifically, but these donations are being made all over the NBA: Kevin Love/Cavs, Blake Griffin, Giannis, Lakers/Clippers, etc., with more to probably follow.  I'm sure somebody is calculating their cost as $X, while somebody else is anticipating their benefit as $Y.

Still, cool to see players and teams stepping up, though would be even nicer if there was no need to because the owners already took care of everybody.  Of course maybe the owners were all planning to, but the players are just grabbing that PR first, never know with these things.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

idk why the players are doing this. The staff workers qualify for government  Unemployment benefits

Actually, a lot of these workers are considered independent contractors and are not eligible for unemployment.  Vendors have had such an arrangement for years, and more recently other aspects of event services have turned to the gig economy.
i don’t think it works like that in a state of emergency. You think the state and federal government are just going to shrug their shoulders at these people losing their jobs ? Lol
have they finally passed a bill giving people paid sick leave and special unemployment yet?  if not, then yes.  they're shrugging their shoulders.

Here's what's in the Pelosi bill that was passed with bipartisan support included, with Trump expected to sign it. There's provision for paid sick leave for those who are sick or have a family member affected, or for workers who have to stay at home because their childcare facility their kid goes to is closed due to Covid-19. Regarding layoffs due to closures due to coronavirus, those folks affected would have to be given leave for up to 12 weeks at 2/3 their normal rate of pay, effective for up to a year.

Quote
One of the biggest changes is a new paid sick leave guarantee for those impacted by the coronavirus, and reaching agreement on this issue was one of the final sticking points to a deal. Under the agreement, employers would be required to provide 14 days of paid sick leave at “not less” than two-thirds their regular rate. They would qualify for the benefit if they are sick and have to be quarantined or treated for coronavirus, or if they have to leave their jobs to take care of a family member who has coronavirus. Workers would also be eligible for paid sick leave if they have to stay home because they have a child whose school or childcare facility has closed due to the coronavirus.

The agreement also dramatically expands the existing paid family medical and leave program from its current form. Under existing law, employers are required to give “job protected” medical leave for up to 12 weeks — meaning workers cannot be fired — without additional pay. Under the Pelosi-Mnuchin plan, workers taking paid medical leave would also be paid at two-thirds of their typical rate of pay for the 12 weeks. This benefit, which applies to companies with fewer than 500 employees, would be available for a year for people affected by the coronavirus.

Congressional aides raised concerns that pushing these new benefits onto employers might bankrupt many businesses already trying to contend with the financial blow from coronavirus. Instead, the legislation gives employers a tax credit equal to 100 percent of paid sick leave wage benefits they have paid out. The plan also beefs up unemployment insurance by giving states additional funding to disburse should there be a significant rise in the ranks of the uninsured.

The more cynical among us will say it's for PR reasons. Others who want to believe in the better side of human nature will say they're trying to help those folks. In any case they got plenty of money they can do what they want with it  :police:

I understand the first two points, but the bolded piece really makes this thing explode imo. Forgive me for sounding heartless, but how many people are going to stay home for three weeks just because their kid's school is closed for precautionary reasons? No sickness is even required to get paid leave in this scenario. I'm surprised the Rs let this one through.

He is trying to make up for the dumb stunt he did.  I think that should do it, in a major way.
Good for Rudy.

Good for Rudy, indeed. It is sad, however, to think his donation is most likely motivated more by guilt than his love and concern for his fellow human being.

Still better than the Bucks, who said they were "proud" to match Giannis in his $100k donations. You can't be proud of things like this and especially at this time. Either you shut up and donate, or don't donate at all.

I don't really like Gobert, but I do think he was unaware that he was infected at the time. Was he an idiot that mocked the virus? Absolutely. But I guess he apologized and stepped in to help in some capacity so ehh he's alright, good for him.

Sure, but guilt implies remorse and that's the correct response to his situation. His actions were inappropriate, but peoples first repsonse to soemthing they dont understand is often to joke.

People can do absolutely stupid things and still have genuine concern and love for their fellow human beings.

Given that we can't really see into their heads, it's usually best to give folks the benefit of the doubt when they do good things rather than question their motivations.
NBA Officiating - Corrupt?  Incompetent?  Which is worse?  Does it matter?  It sucks.

As I said, good for Rudy.

He apologized and appears to want to atone for something stupid he did. That is highly commendable and appears to show remorse for doing what he did, again, good for Rudy.

That said, I think it is more than fair to question his motivation about concern for others given his complete and utter lack of concern prior to being diagnosed. I also think it's fair to think, given his mocking of the disease prior to disgnosis, that if he didn't come down with the disease, he may not have decided to be so generous to people affected by the disease he was mocking or didn't believe existed

Gobert could have actually got it from Wood...

It's certainly possible they both apparently showed symptoms the same day (contrary to reports Wood mentioned flu-like symptoms before Wednesday's game).
