I can't help but think this could cause future locker room problems for the Jazz. Those players can not be very happy with Gobert right now.

Good news is that it isn't as bad on kids as adults. Also good news is that generally healthy people recover quickly. I'm guessing NBA players with their workouts and meals should be able to fight off the virus well.

The NBA resuming just for playoffs is idiotic IMO. There is still a close race for the 8 seed in the West and lots of teams vying for "better seeding" in the middle of the standings.

Memphis has a 3.5 game lead on 3 teams and a 4 game lead on another.  no one would be catching them anytime soon.  wouldn't call it close at this point.  hopeful, but not close

Questions were asked earlier in this thread regarding whether players would be paid. It looks like the owners do have the right not to pay the players if games are cancelled due to an epidemic. From ESPN:

Quote
Will the players be paid?
Almost certainly yes. It is in everyone's interest for the league to continue playing at some later date to allow both the NBA and its players to finish the season and make the money the league normally would have been expected to.

There is, however, a provision in the collective bargaining agreement that would allow for the league to not pay players for missed games during extreme events, including an epidemic.

Per ESPN's Bobby Marks:
According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article XXXIX, section 5, players lose 1/92.6 of their salary for every game missed as a result of a Force Majeure Event ("FME") -- this refers to events or conditions that makes it impossible for the NBA to perform its obligation under the CBA.

The following events are covered: "wars or war-like action (whether actual or threatened and whether conventional or other, including, but not limited to, chemical or biological wars or war-like action); sabotage, terrorism or threats of sabotage or terrorism; explosions; epidemics; weather or natural disasters, including, but not limited to, fires, floods, droughts, hurricanes, tornadoes, storms or earthquakes; and any governmental order or action (civil or military); provided, however, that none of the foregoing enumerated events or conditions is within the reasonable control of the NBA or an NBA Team."

The financial cost is a big reason there is the expectation, according to sources, that the current season will resume at a later date, even if that means the 2020-21 season starts later than expected.

NBA is going to lose money... big time

- Already lost revenue due to Morey vs China
- coronavirus. Refunds/credit fans and nba tv subscribers. Feel bad for ushers etc.

Imo dont think this season will be revived.  A pretty bad deal for teams who made trades for UFA to be players. Next season could be shortened also (pre cautions, until vaccine available).

Possible that NBA draft picks made without workouts?

Yes, I do wonder if sports might be eliminated for the next 2 years. The second year of this virus if no vaccine can be the scariest. The Spanish flu second wave was the scary one.

We dodged a bullet by not making any trades this year. Sports will be missed by us all but it really puts things in perspective.

I interpreted it as the testing that went on last night.  Not the testing that Gobert took.

Yeah Gobert's test was from earlier, they were waiting on the results pregame, hence the delay before cancellation.

Also, why is it that sitting members of Congress can't get tests but Utah can whip up 58 at a few hours' notice? I guess the established close contact with an infected person?

in northern virgina it is a two week wait i heard. the state of testing for the virus in the US is criminal.

Assuming the NBA does resume in a month, will Adam Silver end up voiding the remainder of the regular season? Why not just use the standings as of yesterday to determine the playoff seeding and go from there. And if the league doesn’t resume play until sometime in May, then maybe the playoff format can be adjusted to help maintain a normal regular off-season of activities. Maybe change the first round to a best of 3 format, so it doesn’t spread out over two weeks.

Actually, for this playoff season only, I would love to see a major change, while incorporating the idea of having no fans in attendance. Have the playoffs take place at three neutral site arenas. “March Madness” format, over a two to three week span.

Arena 1 would host the East: 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5. (Double elimination format)
Arena 2 would host the West: 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5. (Double elimination format)
Arena 3 would host the East vs West winners, in a best of 3 format.
